  5. Starting Photoshop • Start Photoshop as described on pages PS 6 and PS 7 • Choose the Default Workspace as described on page PS 8 • Select the Rectangular Marquee tool and then reset all tools as described on pages PS 9 and PS 10 Chapter 5: Enhancing and Repairing Photos

Resetting the Layers Palette • Click the Layers palette menu button and then click Palette Options on the list • When Photoshop displays the Layers Palette Options dialog box, click the option button corresponding to the smallest of the thumbnail sizes, if necessary • If necessary, click Layer Bounds • Click the OK button Chapter 5: Enhancing and Repairing Photos

  8. Opening the Letter Image • Insert the CD that accompanies this book into your CD drive. After a few seconds, if Windows displays a dialog box, click its Close button • In Photoshop, press CTRL+O to open a file.   11. Setting Levels • Press CTRL+L to access the Levels dialog box • When Photoshop displays the Levels dialog box, type 125 in the first Input Levels box to adjust the black levels. Type 1.5 in the second Input Levels box to adjust the gray or midtones.   13. Using the Unsharp Mask • Zoom to 50% magnification and then scroll to the beginning of the letter • Click Filter on the menu bar and then point to Sharpen • Click Unsharp Mask Chapter 5: Enhancing and Repairing Photos

  14. Using the Unsharp Mask • When Photoshop displays the Unsharp Mask dialog box, type 4 in the Radius box.   16. Using the Eraser Tool • On the Tools palette, click the Eraser Tool (E) button • Use the [ or ] keys to adjust the size of the eraser brush. With short strokes, drag through remaining gray areas that are not part of the handwriting itself. If you make a mistake, click the History button in the dock of collapsed palettes on the right side of the workspace, and then click the previous state in the History palette, or press CTRL+Z. Saving for the Web • With your USB flash drive connected to one of the computer’s USB ports, click File on the menu bar and then Save for Web & Devices • When the Save for Web & Devices dialog box is displayed, click the 4-Up tab if necessary. Click the preview other than the original, that looks the best for your system’s connection speed.   19. Saving for the Web • When the Save Optimized As dialog box is displayed, type Letter-Repaired in the File name text box.   25. Using the Spot Healing Brush Tool • Right-click the current healing tool and then click Spot Healing Brush Tool in the list. If necessary on the options bar, click the Mode box arrow and then click Normal. Click Proximity Match if necessary • Move the mouse pointer into the document window and point to the white spot on the chin. Press the [ key or the ] key until the brush tip is just slightly larger than the spot • Click the spot and then move the mouse pointer away to view the results Chapter 5: Enhancing and Repairing Photos

  26. Using the Spot Healing Brush Tool • Move the mouse pointer to the spot between the eyes. Press the [ key to reduce the size of the brush tip. Click the spot and then move the mouse pointer away to view the results • Repeat Step 3 for other spots on the face and neck. If you make a repair that does not look good, click the History button in the dock of collapsed palettes on the right side of the workspace, and then click the previous state in the History palette. Using the Healing Brush Tool • Scroll to display the upper-left corner of the photo • If necessary, press CTRL+R to view the rulers • Right-click the Spot Healing Brush Tool (J) button • Click Healing Brush Tool in the list • If necessary, click Sampled on the options bar. Using the Patch Tool • Right-click the Spot Healing Brush Tool (J) button, and then click Patch Tool in the list • If necessary, click Source on the Patch options bar • Move the mouser pointer to an area left of the light spot, near the man’s head • Drag an area approximately as big as the light spot, but do not include the light spot Chapter 5: Enhancing and Repairing Photos

Adjust the brush size to be just larger than the damage. Saving and Closing the Founder File • With your USB flash drive connected to one of the computer’s USB ports, click File on the menu bar and then Save As • When the Save As dialog box is displayed, type Founder Repaired in the File name text box. Do not press the ENTER key • Click the Save in box arrow and then click USBDISK (F:), or the location associated with your USB flash drive, in the list • Click the Save button. When Photoshop displays the TIFF Options dialog box, click the OK button.
