The lights and the music had always been my favorite things at carnivals. I looked ahead of me and saw Olivia and Darien sitting on a bench. I was about to walk over until I saw him grab her hand. • She rested her head on his chest and his other arm went around her back. I watched him place a kiss on top of her head. I couldn’t take my eyes away from the two of them. God! It felt like my heart was shattering. I turned and walked away blinking back tears. I didn’t need people to see me cry.

I found my blade in its regular spot and ran it across my ankle. I watched the blood trickle out and stream onto the floor. I did it again on my other ankle. • I looked up and stared at my reflection in the mirror. Who was that girl? There were bruises all over my face and finger marks on my neck. I let the tears fall again. I threw the blade across the room and collapsed onto the floor. My breaths were coming in short gasps, and I had to take a deep breath. I curled myself up on the cold and hard bathroom floor and lay there for a little while.

Chloe looked down and let out a high-pitched scream.
