2. SEGREGATION • EVEN THOUGH BLACKS HAD MORE RIGHTS AT THIS TIME, THEY WERE STILL TREATED AS OUTCAST. • *BETWEEN 1889 AND 1945, MISSISSIPPIANS LYNCHED 476 PEOPLE. • *BLACKS WOULD PUBLICLY RESPECT WHITE PEOPLE, BUT PRIVATELY WOULD LEARN HOW TO OUTWIT THEM.

3. BLACK COMMUNITIES • BLACK PEOPLE DEVELOPED THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES… • *THEY BUILT THEIR OWN RESTAURANTS, BARS, BEAUTY SHOPS, AND FUNERAL HOMES. • *THIS HELPED DEVELOP THE ECONOMY AND LESSEN THEIR RELIANCE ON WHITE PEOPLE.

4. SHARECROPPING • *SHARECROPPERS LIVED ROUGH LIVES. • MOST COULD ONLY GROW COTTON, AND THE PRICE OF COTTON WAS LOW. • THEY WERE ONLY ALLOWED TO BUY MATERIALS IN ONE STORE, IN WHICH THEY WOULD DRIVE THE PRICES HIGH. • *LAND OWNERS WERE ALLOWED TO KEEP THE SHARECROPPERS UNTIL THEY PAID BACK THEIR DEBT.(LEGAL SLAVERY)

5. LUMBER INDUSTRY • *BETWEEN 1880 AND 1930 EVERY TREE IN MISSISSIPPI WAS CUT DOWN IN RETURN FOR CASH. • *MS became the leading lumber supplier to the nation. • *THESE COMPANIES DID NOT REPLANT THE TREES AND MS WAS LEFT BARE. (They took their profit and moved on) • *By the end of World War I, the boom had ended. All valuable trees were gone. • *Some cities that had grown up with the lumber industry (Hattiesburg & Laurel), survived. • Some other boom towns, shrank and never recovered.

6. THE PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT • The Progressive Movement was a reform movement in the United States in the early 1900’s, which had as its goal to clean up the evils that had been brought into existence in business, the government and politics, and society in general by industrialization immediately following the Civil War.

7. MISSISSIPPI AND WORLD WAR I • *WWI BEGAN IN 1914IN EUROPE BETWEEN THE ALLIED POWERS AND THE CENTRAL POWERS. • *The US was not drawn into the war until 1917. • MS had brief involvement, while the US had brief involvement too. *The war ended in 1919.* • THE ARMY BUILT TWO CAMPS IN MISSISSIPPI. CAMP SHELBY AND WEST POINT.
