Sebastian Thrun • Sebastian Thrun is a professor at Stanford, and the head of Google's X Lab. Thrun has done important work in the field of artificial intelligence. He has many achievements, including winning the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge
Beginnings of Udacity • In 2011, his course, Intro to Artificial Intelligence was offered to and served as a strong case of concept for the idea that would eventually become Udacity • Thrun started Udacity in February 2012
Udacity Sets Apart • Udacityhas a similar teaching format to Khan Academy, a free resource aimed at high school level students. It utilizes YouTube videos that present the concepts using an illustrative approach, using a Wacom digital pen system. • Udacity extends from Khan Academy in teaching by providing students with exercises, often short answer or multiple choice, which help to bond important concepts. Udacity also has a coding environment that allows students to write and execute code online.
Udacity Sets Apart • The videos and evaluation methods have set Udacity apart from many of its fellow online learning sites. Udacity has more fundamental level courses that focus on concepts such as web development, algorithms and testing and design. • Udacityhas also introduced new courses at a fast pace since the first two courses were offered in 2012. Now Udacityconsists of around15 courses.
Udacity’s Importance • Udacity's goal of establishing a form of education has been successful. • Udacity has partnered with technology firms in the surrounding Silicon Valley area. • A number of soon to come courses will be offered in partnership with companies like Autodesk and Nvidia. The courses will deal with advance technical concepts that are at the center of industry.
