Metaphysical Poetry • If you found the intricacies of the sonnet form and musical language of Elizabethan love poetry artificial, you are not alone. During the 17-century, a number of poets rejected the style the Elizabethan lyric poetry. It became known as metaphysical poetry.
Metaphysical Poetry • It was written in the manner of everyday speech. • Metaphysical means abstract or theoretical reasoning. • They experimented with language in imaginative ways.
Characteristics of Metaphysical Poetry • They used metaphysical conceit - which is an extended metaphor comparing two dissimilar things (remember fire & ice?). • They also used paradox - a statement that seems contradictory but suggests a truth. Example: The only thing certain is that nothing is certain. • Complex sentence patterns • Witty and imaginative plays on words
