iCascarones! • Cascarones are eggshells that have been emptied and cleaned out. They are then dyed bright colors, filled with confetti and sealed with a glued on piece of tissue paper.
iHistory! • It is believed cascarones can be traced to China, where eggs were filled with perfumed powder and given as gifts. • They might have been brought to Spain by Marco Polo, who introduced them to Carlotta, the wife of Emperor Maximillian. • When the Emperor's wife moved to Mexico, she brought them with her because she was fascinated with them. There, they were named cascarones after the Spanish word for shell "cascara."
What does it mean? • The egg represents the empty tomb of Christ on Easter morning, and the bright-colored paper is the joy of Jesus' Resurrection.
