ENGLAND 2002 – SUMMER TOUR Josef Chrpa student from grade seven
Me and my parents had to choose one of these two possibilities to be able to visit Great Britain: the submarine tunnel or the ferry. We chose the ferry as most Czech people. After a two-hour voyage we were greeted by Dover rocks. After that it was simple - going by bus towards London.
LONDON • The capital with plenty of sights. We visited at least some of them: famous Tower Bridge, TheHousesofParliament, Buckingham Palace with changing the royal guards and The Tower of London with the coronation jewels (the admission was about ten pounds). Of course we didn't forget about Madame Tussaud's Museum with wax statues of famous and rich people and the modern Millenium Bridge with the near gigantic Russian Wheel. We also manage to visit The Tate Modern Gallery - an attractive gallery of modern art in the building of former power station near the Millenium Bridge. London is worth being visited longer but we didn't have enough time because we were going to set out to the area of North Yorkshire.
YORK • We were accommodated in tents in a family camp near York. The weather was rainy and chilly even though it was in the middle of July. I know it's usual for England. • The city of York has more than two-thousand history. The cathedral York Minster which was building for over two hundred and fifty years is the best preserved medieval gate with a falling rail Monk Bar. The York Castle Museum with the demonstrations of people's daily way of life should be visited as well. And also the attractive Jorvik Viking Centre - the reconstruction of the Viking town.
NORTH ENGLAND NATURE • The main part of our tour was made up of visiting the nature beauty of English north and north-east. • The scenery around the historic town of Whitby - the place James Cook started setting off towards his transatlantic discoveries in, is very romantic. Green plains, grazing sheep and steep rock cliffs. • The unique experience is the trip to Holy Island - an island you can visit with dry feet at low-tide. If you miss your coming back, the sea would keep you there. That's why there is a special "tide schedule". There are wild seals near the island and the island is taken for the gate Christianity has come to Britain through.
NORTH ENGLAND NATURE • Another exceptional experience was our attempt to climb up the highest mountain of great Britain - Scafell Pike (almost 1000 meters above sea level). Unfortunately the weather was extremely bad so we, wet and freezing, had to go back in the middle of our climbing. The cold wind and rain drove us to real hot English tea and punch. • And then we were walking around beautiful lakes at Lake District, where we spent the whole day.
NORTH ENGLAND NATURE • To be in England and not to taste fish and chips ? Unthinkable! We tasted this typical meal in the center - in the town of Scarborough where we also sang the "Scarborough fair" song. • We spent evenings in the camp by visiting local pubs in a near village. By the way, they draw beer into a pint (0,6 l) glass. • Nice England said goodbye to us by our missing the ferry. So we had to wait on the coast for another one till the morning.
