WHAT Was It? 1)New South Wales located in Australia was a Penal colony created by captain Author Phillip on January 26, 1788. 2) A Penal colony is a place of imprisonment and punishment at a remote location. In this particular case it was a unpopulated area of Australia. 3) Sydney Cove was also the first British settlement in Australian history as a penal colony.

  3. 1) The settlement was named Sydney cove in honor of the secretary of the state lord Sydney. 2) January 26th is also is now known as National Australia day.

  4. rth Among the first settlers were 778 convicts (192 women and 586 men). 250 marines and their wives and children. Conditions on the way over were terrible. But very few people actually died during the voyage over.

  5. How were they treated 1) Convicts didn’t have a choice if they were told to work they had to. 2) A lot of the inmates were given jobs based on their skillsets. 3) The convicts were responsible for building roads, houses, and even the hospitals. .

  6. Convicts Well educated men would often be given easy going jobs as book keepers etc. Women often escaped their sentences as they were often assumed to be more useful as wifes and mothers. They often escaped their sentences by getting married.

  7. Punishment When a convict acted up they became subject to leg irons(branding)and lashings. 2) A lot of the convicts couldn’t even speak English and were beaten because they failed to listen.

  8. Typhus Typhus disease was a disease that was spread by lice, and fleas. The disease also cause photophobia and delirium.

  9. Dysentry 1) Dysentry is a type of abdominal intestine disease that often results in blood in your stool or mucas.

  10. Cholera Cholera is another abdominal disease that causes watery stool and can even cause death if left untreated.

  11. Causes of these infectious diseases Typhus was often caused by lice and fleas due to the inmates being so close together. Dysentry and Cholera were often cause by ingesting food that had other form of foreign feces in it.

  12. 1) Very confined quarters. 2) Often there were 20 bodies crammed into a single hut.

  13. Tickets of leave Convicts could receive a ticket of leave due to good behavior. This basically gave them their freedom back meaning they were free to return to England if they chose to do so. This system actually worked so well that we (USA) have actually adopted this same rule for our inmates imprisoned now.
