  3. Key Words & Phrases Words and phrases are integral for understanding the short story because they help you to determine and inference on what the author is trying to make you comprehend upon the situation that is occurring. The keys words can help to interpret what the author is describing to better help the reader understand. That way it is easy to know what the author’s meaning is behind the phrase.

  4. Key Words & Phrases “He carried it home guilty in his briefcase.” This is explaining how Winston feels uncomfortable and that he understands that his actions are wrong. But although what he feels in his heart, his mind is telling him to continue in what he’s doing.

  5. Key Words & Phrases “...people who had incurred the displeasure of the Party simply disappeared…” The key words in this quote is showing how those who don’t follow “the Party” and their way of life, they seem to just disappear. With no reason of why they left. Home

  6. Literary Devices Literary Devices are particular techniques that authors used in order to convey a certain meaning. In order to give more emotion or express feeling into the text. It’s able to provide a clear of image of what the author is trying to interpret to the reader.

  7. Literary Devices Foreshadowing: “theyll shoot me i dont care theyll shoot in the back of the neck i dont care down with big brother” Winston is predicting what would happen to him if those in charge figured out that he was keeping a diary.

  8. Literary Devices Mood: “Nothing was yours except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull.” It’s depressing because when you aren’t able to own anything that is personally valuable to you because you aren’t able to be individual. Home

  9. Intertextual Connections Divergent: Divergent is related to 1984 because in this story, the citizens are put into different “factions” that will determine what role they play in society. Each faction is depended upon a certain personality.

  10. Intertextual Connections The Hunger Games: In this trilogy, it is about a young girl who fights for justice and freedom. Katniss is a symbol of hope throughout the districts of her nation. They must stand together in order to become a more equal society.

  11. Intertextual Connections The Giver: This novel is similar to 1984 because it tells a life of a boy named Jonas and his struggles in his utopian community. He realizes what an imperfect world he is truly living in. Home

  12. Questions “Your a thought-criminal....” How can you be a thought-criminal? In the society created in 1984, the citizens’ own thoughts aren’t allowed. They can get punished just for having personal feelings and opinions.

  13. Questions “...perhaps the Brotherhood really existed!... to be sure that the Brotherhood was not simply a myth. Some days he believed in it, some days not.” Shouldn’t he feel confident in his belief of the Brotherhood? It’s confusing for me how Winston will not always believe in the Brotherhood. He is questioning whether or not it existed as well.

  14. Questions “ It was even a sort of love offering to start off by telling the worst.” Why start off a relationship with negativity? It doesn’t seem “normal” to begin a love relationship that is first filled with the bad. Others should have the opportunity to see the good before the worst. Home

  15. Personal Reactions “Id done it enough. Had to, as you might say.” I thought that this was inspiring quote because it is explaining how Winston is willing to be open and honest about him writing in his diary. How he feels as needs to record his daily feelings, thoughts, and opinions.

  16. Personal Reactions “It could not have been ten seconds and yet it seemed a long time their hands were clasped together.” In my opinion, this moment, defines love. It doesn’t matter what they’re doing or where they are. Together it feels like forever. They are both passionate and care for eachother. Home

  17. Contextual Information “... then only by penetrating through a maze of barbed-wire entanglements, steel doors, and hidden machine gun nests.” Orwell could be referring to the constant violence and war that went on throughout the 1940’s.

  18. Contextual Information “ But if detected, it was reasonably certain it would be punished by death.” This quote could relate to the Holocaust where Jews were killed for the blame of Germany’s great depression. If a Jew was found they were either killed or put into a concentration camp. Home

  19. Synthesis “I understand HOW. I do not understand WHY.” To me, this quote means that Winston is able to conclude what is happening. But he isn’t quite able to comprehend the reason behind the happenings. He yearns for explanation as to why the world he lives in is full of hate.

  20. Synthesis “The bomb had demolished a group of houses two hundred meters up the street…” It is a violent society that is in the 1984 novel. But it almost seems as if it’s normal for the citizens. War, destruction, and chaos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0sUoLkn0T4 Home
