Equity Theory • Lawler (1971. 1990) found pay satisfaction or dissatisfaction is influenced by employee perceptions of what they contribute and possible rewards. When employees feel under-rewarded, they seek equity with the higher paid employees by adjusting their own behaviors. Common responses are absenteeism, lateness, longer and undocumented breaks, decreased productivity, stress, and resentment.
Attrition Factors There are numerous factors involving attrition: • retirement, • quit due to health/personal reasons (including death) • promotion, • working conditions, • transfer to a different position (deputy) for better pay/ benefits
Initial (Basic)Training Costs It is difficult to compare the actual costs of training a new corrections officer because of differences in how these costs are calculated. • costs of books and supplies • costs of the training academy • costs of housing/ per diem (if needed, i.e. remote site) • salary of the new officer • overtime (instructor or staff at the facility covering for the instructor) • salary of the instructor, etc.
