Course Basics Select enough courses to fill 7 periods Use a combination of year-long and/or semester-long courses Consider graduation requirements (foreign language, fine art, PE, speech and electives) Consider their career goals Find pre-requisites If two semesters average to a 70 the student will receive 1 full year of credit Students receive 0.5 credits a semester for each class they successfully pass.

  10. Athletics Considerations Only one athletic period at a time. There are tryouts for most sports. Some athletic programs begin in the summer – Check athletics page on website towards end of year. (Ex: Football, Cross Country & Volleyball.) If you do not make the team, you will be placed in PE. All athletics require a PHYSICAL EXAM every year.

  15. Schedule Change Policy Last day for elective changes is June 7th due to creating master schedule. During the school year, a student may request a change in course level only at certain times of the semester according to District policy. Before a change in level request can be made: Student, parent(s), and teacher must conference No missing assignments and attending tutorials

  21. AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) What is AVID? A program that places students with potential in advanced classes and provides them with critical support. Open to incoming 9th, 10th, and 11th graders All AVID students are required to be in at least one PreAP course while enrolled in the program and will receive elective credit for the AVID course. Pass/Fail • Beyond Graduation Requirements • Course grades are not included in GPA • Eligibility is still based on course grade • Advantageous for only small % of students • Conference with your counselor before deciding • Deadline is one week after first report card • Must apply for each semester

Dual Credit Basics • All Dual Credit courses: • Are dependent upon enrollment and teacher availability • Require college placement scores in reading, writing, and math (if attempting to do a math, science or economics) • Are accepted at most colleges • Acceptable tests include: • TAKS-ELA and Essay only (math portion not used) • ASSET, COMPASS, THEA, SAT, ACT, and/or ACCUPLACER • Dual Credit students must: • First apply online to Lonestar College-Kingwood • Fill out an Exceptional Admissions form with parent, student, and high school counselor signatures • Complete forms obtained from CelieHerbst, Dual Credit Liaison • Test in March or April at Lonestar College and have scores sent to KPHS • Follow college guidelines when dropping a dual credit course

Perfect score 2400 (800 for each section) Student strong in Reading and Writing do best! ACT – www.actstudent.org Tests Reading, English, Math, Science (writingoptional) No penalty for guessing. Answer every question! Perfect score 36 (Average of all three sections) Students strong in Math and Science do best! MOST COLLEGES WILL ACCEPT EITHER!
