Background • Founding of Society of Civil Engineering Technicians (SCET) in 1968. • Board of Incorporate Engineers and Technicians (BIET) took over from SCET in 1989 following the merger with ICE • Once the 2 grades integrated into ICE, BIET disbanded in 2001. • Decline in numbers of EngTech
The Civil Engineering Team.. 2009 { c100,000 c35% 1% Membership The independently verified, professionally qualified: competent team Industry C40,000
The Step Change • Aim: 2000 new Technician Members by the end of 2015 • Challenge: On current performance will deliver c250 • Step Change: An order of magnitude increase in the number of new Technician Members • Core Focus: UK
Why? • Technicians perform a valuable role within the Civil Engineering Team, are under represented within ICE, and under valued by employers. There is a substantial opportunity to qualify technicians and develop and share knowledge, which is within ICE’s Royal Charter obligations.
Vision Build up • Initial 5–year: Technicians are valued and recognised for their contribution to the civil engineering team by industry. 2,000 new Technician Members in 5 years (which currently would be 5% representation). Technician Members are fully engaged within ICE. • 12-15 – year: Intermediate (changes in numbers): The TMICE membership is balanced at the same level of representation as CEng/IEng Membership (currently: 35% would equate to 14000 TMICE) • Ultimate: 100% of civil engineering technicians are Technician Members and fully engaged within ICE. (Currently would equate to 40,000 TMICE)
Strategy • Promote the value of Technicians and Technician Membership • Develop and operate flexible routes to Technician Membership • Offer an effective Learned Society for Technician Members
