The Big Ideas! • Energy exists in different forms • Energy can change forms but is never lost • Technology improves the ways people use energy
Different Forms of Energy have different uses. • Almost everything occurring around you involves energy. • All forms of energy have one important point in common---they cause changes to occur. • Energy: is the ability to cause change or do work.
Forms of Energy • Mechanical • Sound • Chemical • Thermal • Electromagnetic • Nuclear
Exploring the Forms of Energy • Mechanical Energy: the energy that moves objects
Exploring the Forms of Energy • Sound Energy: energy from the vibration of particles in a solid, liquid, or gas
Exploring the Forms of Energy • Chemical Energy: energy that is stored in the chemical composition of matter.
Exploring the Forms of Energy • Thermal Energy: the total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter.
Exploring the Forms of Energy • Electromagnetic Energy: energy transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves. (visible light, x-rays, microwaves)
Exploring the Forms of Energy • Nuclear energy: the source of nuclear energy is the nucleus
Kinetic versus Potential Energy • Kinetic energy: the energy of motion • Kinetic energy INCREASES as mass INCREASES • Kinetic energy INCREASES as speed INCREASES
Kinetic versus Potential Energy • Potential energy: the stored energy that an object has due to its position or chemical composition.
Energy can change forms but is never lost! • Potential energy is stored in chemicals on the head of a match. The flame of the burning match releases that energy as light and heat.
Converting Energy in a Dam 1. Water held behind the dam has potential energy 2. Potential energy is converted to kinetic energy when the water moves through the tunnel 3. Kinetic energy is used to turn turbines. This mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy by generators. 4. Electrical energy is transmitted through the wires, and then converted into many forms of energy
Law of Conservation of Energy! • States that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. • Energy changes form
Energy Efficiency • A measurement of usable energy after an energy conversion. • Energy-efficient household appliances.
Technology improves the use of energy resources. Solar Cells: made of several layers of light-sensitive materials, which convert sunlight directly into electrical energy.
Technology improves the ways people use energy! • Efficient lights • Efficient cars • Solar energy • Wind energy
