MOTIVATION – Maslow theory’s • Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist, author of the hierarchy of needs
MOTIVATION – Maslow theory’s • "It is quite true that man lives by bread alone — when there is no bread. But whathappens to man’s desires when there is plenty of bread and when his belly is chronically filled? • At once other (and “higher”) needs emerge and these, rather than physiological hungers, dominate the organism. And when these in turn are satisfied, again new (and still “higher”) needs emerge and so on. This is what we mean by saying that the basic human needs are organized into a hierarchy of relative prepotency" (Maslow, 1943, p. 375).

Man is a social animal. These needs become important. For example- love, affection, belongingness, friendship, conversation, etc. • Esteem needs-these needs relate to desire for self-respect, recognition and respect from others. • Self-actualization needs-these are the needs of the highest order and these needs are found in those person whose previous four needs are satisfied. ERG ThEORY • Clayton Alderfer has proposed an alternative hierarchy of needs – called the ERG Theory of Motivation.
ERG THEORY • Instead of the five needsthatarehierarchically • organized, Alderferproposedthatbasichumanneedsmay be gruppedundefrthreecategories • Existencecorespondens to Maslow’spsychological • and safetyneeds, relatendesscorresponds to • socialneeds, and growth refers to Maslow’s • esteem and self-actualization • Thisteory ‘s maycontribution to theliterature’s • of Maslow’saasumptions . F.e. , ERG theorydoesn’trankneedsinanyparticular order • and explicitlyrecognizesthatmorethan one • needmayoperateat a given time. Moreover, theteoryhas a ‘frustration-regression’ hypothesissuggestingthatindividualswhoarefrustratedintheirattempts to satisfy one needmayregress to another.
McCellandneedtheory • Another well-known need-based theory of motivation, as opposed to hierarchy of needs of satisfaction-dissatisfaction, is the theory developed by McClelland’ • McClelland developed his theory based on Henry Murray’s developed long list of motives and manifest needs used in his early studies of personality • McClellandidentifiedthefollowingthreecharacteristics • Needs for Achievement • Needs for Power • Needs for Affililation
