  1. Finding the density of air An experiment

  2. To find the mass of the air A round-bottom flask containing air was weighed. A vacuum pump was used to extract air from the flask. The flask was weighed again with the air removed. mass of flask containing air = 185.93 g mass of flask with air removed = 185.68 g mass of air removed from the flask = 0.25g = 0.25 x 10-3 kg

  3. To find the volume of the air The end of the tube on the evacuated flask was held under water. The tube was opened and water was pushed into the flask to replace the air which had been removed. The volume of water which entered the flask was measured. This was the same as the volume of air which had been removed from the flask. Volume of water / air = 327 ml = 327 cm3 = 327x10-6m3

  4. To calculate the density of the air The accepted value for the density of air is between 1.2 and 1.3 kg/m3 depending on the temperature, pressure and water vapour content of the air.
