  3. Continent - pg 11 • It is one of the seven land areas of Earth. • Can you name the 7 continents? • New Jersey is located on the continent of North America

  4. Relative Locations – pg 11 • Is where it is in relation to other places on Earth • NJ is located • South of New York • East of Pennsylvania • North of Delaware • West of the Atlantic Ocean

  6. Region – pg 12 • Is an area with features that set it apart from other areas. • New Jersey is located in the Northeast Region of the United States • There are 10 states in this region • Starting in Maine and ending in Delaware

  7. Physical Characteristics – pg 12 • Regions and states can also be divided by these. • Natural Regions- characteristics formed by nature • Places in each natural region may have similar land forms, bodies of water, or climate.

New Jersey’s Natural Region – pg 13 • Appalachian Ridge and Valley • Northwestern part of state • Ridge- long narrow chain of mountains • Highlands • Made up of flat-topped ridges and narrow valleys • Forests and lakes • Piedmont • Largest cities and rivers • Hudson and Delaware Rivers • Atlantic Coastal Plain • Largest region • area of low flat land • West Plain • rich and fertile soil • Most farms and orchards are in this area • East Plain • Sandy, marshes and pine forests
