SDL Sessions … and how they can help
The history Lesson… • New GPR contract 2004 • GPR has 10 session week, not 9 • “Loses” a half day per week • 7 “clinical” & 3 “educational” sessions • Introduction of new concept – Self Directed Learning session
Various Interpretations: • Three different learning environments: • Group Learning (HDR) • One-to-one (Tutorials) • Adult Learning (SDL) • Half day • FOFO • Proper utilisation of session
Characteristics of Adult Learning - • Dependent on others • Inexperienced • Readiness to learn set by organised education • Subject-centred orientation to learning • Motivated by external rewards & punishments • Increasingly self-directing • Experienced • Readiness to learn governed by ‘life’ • Problem-centred orientation • Motivated by internal incentives and self-esteem
Knots by r.d.laing • There is something I don’t know • that I am supposed to know. • I don’t know what it is I don’t know, • and yet am supposed to know, • and I feel I look stupid • If I seem both not to know it • and not know what it is I don’t know, • Therefore I pretend I know it. • This is nerve-racking • since I don’t know what I must pretend to know. • Therefore I pretend to know everything. • I feel you know what I am supposed to know • but you can’t tell me what it is • because you don’t know that I don’t know what it is. • You may know what I don’t know, but not • that I don’t know it, • and I can’t tell you. So you will have to tell me everything.
Ten Principles of Learning(Carl Rogers) • People have a natural potential to learn • Learners must perceive relevance • Learning that involves changing ‘self’ is threatening and tends to be resisted • Resistance is reduced when external threats are low • When threat to self is low, learning can proceed • Much learning is acquired through doing
Ten Principles of learning(Carl Rogers) 7. Learning is facilitated when students take responsibility 8. Self initiated learning involving feelings and intellect are the most lasting and pervasive 9. Independence, creativity and self-reliance are all facilitated when evaluation by others is secondary to self-criticism 10. Most socially useful learning is learning the process of learning
Educational planning • Needs Assessment • Educational Plan • Implementation • Reflection & Review • Further planning
The Reflective Cycle • Description • What happened? • Feelings • What were you thinking and feeling? • Evaluation • What was good and bad about the experience? • Analysis • What sense can you make of the situation? • Conclusion • What else could you have done? • Action plan • If it arose again what would you do?
Practicalities: • Discuss with your Trainee their needs • Together, formulate a plan for meeting them • Trainee implements plan, recording all activities • Discuss outcomes with Trainee • Start another cycle
