The StarPlane project aims to allow Grid applications to manipulate the photonic network infrastructure of SURFnet6 in real-time, optimizing the performance of specific e-Science applications. It offers fast, application-specific allocation of network resources with deterministic characteristics, low-level resource partitioning, and high-level requests using policies and inference.

The Initial Question ? ? Grid Applications “Management Plane” >request various topologies >prevent cross-interference >bandwidth/latency guarantee >network resource reservation & partitioning >...... ? ? Integrate Photonic Network
StarPlane::Overview • StarPlane is a NWO funded project carried out by UvA and VU with major contributions from SURFnet and NORTEL. • StarPlane will use the physical infrastructure provided by SURFnet6 and the distributed supercomputer DAS-3. • The vision is to allow part of the photonic network infrastructure of SURFnet6 to be manipulated by Grid applications to optimize the performance of specific e-Science applications. • The novelty is to give flexibility directly to the applications by allowing them to choose the logical topology in real time, ultimately with subsecond lambda switching time.
StarPlane::Goals • fast, application-specific allocation of the network resources with deterministic characteristics; • application-specific composition of the protocol stack that is used to control the resources; • low-level resource partitioning (and, hence, no interference); • high-level requests (whereby policies and inference are used to assist the user).
Background::SURFnet6 In The Netherlands, SURFnet connects between 180: - universities; - academic hospitals; - most polytechnics; - research centers. with a user base of ~750K users It is a part of the world wide Internet. It is a hybrid network which offers not only regular Internet services but also lighpaths with speeds up to 10Gbps SURFnet6 was officially launched on 23-01-2006 ref: SURFnet
Background::CPL Common Photonic Layer (CPL) is photonic portion for lightpaths: • 6000km dark fiber network with Nortel DWDM and TDM equipments • 5 rings • initially 36 lambdas (4x9) • later 72 lambdas (8x9) Each lambda with up to 10Gbps possible throughput

WSS • WSS will allow us to redirect a selected input color to the output fiber • This allows us to flexibly reconfigure the network according to the application demands. • The key issue of StarPlane is subsecond switching, and topology reconfiguration.
How to make it work • develop the interfaces between the application and the management plane; • describe all resources in a ‘common language’; • investigate the capabilities of the various network devices related to StarPlane; • manipulate the network devices in control plane on demand of application; • integrate all possible solutions from different parties.
Current Progress • App use cases: • Large ‘stand-alone’ file transfers • Large file (speedier) Stage-in/Stage-out • App with static bandwidth requirements • App with dynamic bandwidth requirements • WS prototype development • Determine APIs for app (see next) • Investigate HW
APIs • Examples: • query_availability(site_A_to_B, bw, s_time, diff_slot); • reservation(site_A_to_B, bw, s_time, duration); • free(res_id);
Future Plan • Finish the WS development • Research on the GMPLS simulation box in Canada via remote access • Integrate AAA, DRAC...
