BRIDGE • A bridge device filters data traffic at a network boundary. Bridges reduce the amount of traffic on a LAN by dividing it into two segments. • Now it allows the frame to go from one port to other port only when the frame is dedicated to that port.
SWITCH • A network switch or switching hub is a computer networking device that connects network segments. • It can read Mac address available at each port, according to which filter table is generated inside it, using which it handles the transactions between the different ports.
MANAGEABLE SWITCH • Basically same as normal switch, only difference is that, it is configurable due to which it provides some additional features as mentioned below. • To create VLAN’s • Provide individual port security. • Ports can be configured to operate for both voice as well as data. • VOIP device connectivity.
router • Router is used for WAN connectivity. • It is configurable device, we can program it as per our requirement. • It provides Routing. • It provides WAN security. • It provides Inter-VLAN communication.
modem • A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information.
Types of modems • Cable modem. The cable modem uses a coaxial cable television lines to provide a greater bandwidth than the dial-up comuter modem. An extremely fast access to the Web is providing by the cable modem with downstream transmission up to 38 Mbits/s and an upstream transmission up to 1 Mbits/s. • Dial-up modem Used to access Dial-up internet .Dial-up Internet access is a type of Internet connectivity that operates through a standard telephone line.
DSL modem. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modem is exclusively used for connections from a telephone switching office to the user. This technology, available and frequently usable, split up into two main categories 1] ADSLor Asymetric Digital Subcriber Lineis used in North America and supports from 1.5 Mbits/s up to 9 Mbits/s of downstream transmission rate and up to 3 Mbits/s of upstream transmission rate. 2] SDSL. SDSL or Symetric Digital Subcriber Line is used in Europe and has the same data rates for downstream and upstream transmission which is 128 Kbits/s.
Wireless Modem:Some Internet Service Providers supports wireless internet services. The wireless modems are used for this service. These modems work similar to traditional wired modems except its structure. • GPRS Modem:The GPRS modems are used to browser internet and for other communication using the GPRS services. The GPRS (General Packet Radio Signals) service is provided on the cellular networks.
