Mr.KardoucheBiology – Room 318 Welcome I am very glad that you are here!
ARE YOU READY TO BEGIN! I know that we have some really insightful and deep thinking people in this class. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and questions. I do not want us to be “regurgitators” of information. I hope that we can think thoughts that have never been thought before. Above all, I want us to have fun and enjoy our time together.
These are some guidelines I will try to follow: This is OUR classroom, not MY classroom I will try to be in a good mood every day, and when I am not, I will not hold you accountable. Try to do the same. I will try to be clear in the academic expectations of this course and fair in evaluating you I will try to keep my grades current and posted online so you can check your academic progress. I am here to help you as a facilitator. We are all our own best teachers.
What are we going to Study? • We are going to try to find answers to the most interesting questions there are! • WHAT IS LIFE? • WHERE DOES LIFE COME FROM?
PLEASE TAKE OUT A PIECE OF PAPER AND WRITE DOWN THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS: • 1) WHAT IS LIFE? • 2) WHERE DOES LIFE COME FROM?
What is life? • From the dictionary: • The quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body • A principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings • An organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction
WHAT DO YOU THINK? • Answer these questions on your paper: • 3) What is alive other than a cell? • 4) Where did all the cells come from? • 5) What is energy? • 6) Do all cells need energy to stay alive?
Did you know that: • Nothing is alive other than a cell • All cells only come from existing cells • Energy is what gives anything the ability to move something – such as moving a single molecule in a cell. • Without energy all cells die.
In order to study about life, we need to understand: • How Science Research is done and be able to perform experiments correctly • The basic chemistry of cells - What they are made from and why. • Some parts all cells have in common and things they all need to do to stay alive. • How and why cells make new cells • How a cell stores, uses and passes on the information to build an entire organism
