  1. Spike the Porcupine By: Jocelyn Gibson

  2. Spike is a porcupine whose first day of school is today. He is very nervous about finding his way to school and back home.

  3. Spike has packed up his things and is ready to go. Spike’s mom kisses him and reminds him how to get to school. He must remember the directions so he doesn’t get lost.

  4. Spike walks out the door and goes straight until he comes to the bridge. He goes OVER the bridge.

  5. After going OVER the bridge, spike walks until he comes to the triangle pond. He goes AROUND the pond.

  6. After going AROUND the triangle pond, Spike goes THROUGH the tunnel.

  7. After going THROUGH the tunnel, Spike walks until he comes to the porcupine crossing sign. He walks down the path that is to his RIGHT.

  8. After going RIGHT down the split path, spike walks UNDER the arch.

  9. After walking UNDER the arch, Spike continues walking until he sees a burned tree FAR away. He walks until the FAR tree is NEAR to him.

  10. Just past the burned tree is Spike’s school. He made it!

  11. Let’s review how Spike got to school. First he went Over the bridge; then AROUND the triangle pond; then THROUGH the tunnel; then RIGHT down the split path; then UNDER the arch; and finally he walked until the burned tree that was FAR away became NEAR to him.
