Fuels Ventilation and Combustion Alan White
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • The unit has been developed to allow the learner to gain underpinning technology integrated with practical assignment work • Extensive use of installed appliances and visual aids to demonstrate principles and reinforce technology is recommended • The unit is designed to provide the learner with an appreciation of fuels, their requirements to allow complete combustion
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • The effects of incomplete combustion on the flue gas constituents; this could be demonstrated using a flue gas analyser. The effect of the products of incomplete combustion on people should be emphasised. The dangers of storing or using LPG below ground level should be emphasised. • Should use application of the knowledge gained the workplace to emphasise the necessity for correct flues and ventilation for all fuel burning appliances.
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • Syllabus Document • F.V.C 1.1 • Outline the main constituents of natural and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and the conditions necessary for complete combustion • F.V.C.1.2 • Outline the requirements for flues and ventilation for gas, solid fuel, and oil burning appliances.
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.3 • Outline the procedures of flue pull and spillage testing on open flue, gas, solid fuel and oil burning appliances • F.V.C 1.4 • Outline the fuel types for oil and solid fuel burning appliances
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C 1.5 • Qualifications and Supervision • F.V.C 1.6 • Outline the requirements for the installation of a gas appliance
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.7 • Outline the procedures and perform gas tightness testing on a domestic installation • F.V.C 1.8 • Identify a selection of gas controls and correctly describes their functions for the safe operation of the gas appliance
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C.1.9 • Demonstrate the correct method of conducting pressure readings from a meter to a gas appliance • F.V.C. 1.10 • Demonstrate the correct use of a flue gas analyser and interpret results from flue sampling
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C 1.11 • Identify industry unsafe situations and document appropriate procedures and documentation • F.V.C. 1.12 • Commission a gas appliance using appropriate tools and test equipment • 1.7 -1.12 can be integrated as an assessment
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • Assessment • A holistic approach has been adopted for all the formative assessments in the delivery of the practical and underpinning knowledge parts as detailed in the syllabus document. Learners can work in pairs for the practical activities but will require to complete a final practical test individually
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • There will be underpinning knowledge objective tests to confirm knowledge transfer of subject areas and learner feedback to learners to confirms area for improvement / areas of strength • There are a variety of practical, investigative tasks, other assignments and objective tests that can be developed by the centre to compliment the syllabus content
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.1 (same as old unit 8) • Outline the main constituents of natural and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and the conditions necessary for complete combustion • Objective test • F.V.C.1.2 (slight changes/additions) • Outline the requirements for flues and ventilation for gas, solid fuel, and oil burning appliances. • Assignment
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.3 (same as old unit 8) • Outline the procedures for flue pull and spillage testing on an open flue appliance • Assignment/ Practical Test
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C 1.4 (new) • Outline the fuel types for oil and solid fuel burning appliances • This section is to give the learner an appreciation of fuel specifications for oil and solid fuel and will be integrated into assignment 1.2
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C 1.5 (same as old unit 8) • Qualifications and Supervision • Restricted Response • F.V.C 1.6 (same as old unit 8) • Outline the requirements for the safe installation of gas appliances • Structured question
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C.1.7(same as old unit 8) • Demonstrate the correct procedures for tightness testing on a domestic installation (air and gas) • Assignment/Practical Task • New tightness testing procedures
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C 1.8 (changes from old unit 8) • Identify a selection of gas controls and correctly describe their functions for the safe operation of a gas appliance • Assignment/Practical Task
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.9 (new) • Demonstrate the correct procedures for checking operating pressures at meter, the burner operating pressure (inlet and /or outlet) gas rates, heat inputs for the safe operation of a gas appliance • Assignment / Practical Task
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.10 (new) • Demonstrate the correct use of a flue gas analyser and interpret results from flue sampling • Assignment / Practical Task
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.11 (new) • Identify industry unsafe situation and document appropriate procedures and documentation • Assignment
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.12 (same as old unit 8) • Outline the procedures for carrying out a commission a gas appliance • Practical exercise
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • Changes • F.V.C 1.2 (Assignment) • As before but changes in the assignment part/s • Select a suitable flue system (this can be supported by a labelled sketch) • Specify materials, design construction and termination of the flue system • Calculate the size of ventilators required
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • Select an approved fuel for the boiler • Select a carbon monoxide detector for the installation and give reasons for your answer • Specify an alternative flue arrangement for the installation • Measure the ventilator/s for the boiler and decide if it is acceptable (assessor to supply) • This is much the same as the previous unit but with some additions with the inclusion of solid fuel and oil
Title Fuels, Ventilation and Combustion • F.V.C. 1.4 (included in assignment 1.2) • This can be integrated into F.V.C. 1.2 to give an appreciation of fuels for solid fuel and oil • F.V.C.1.8 (controls and their functions) • Control identification and their functions, mainly fsd’s, asd’s, gas valves, regulators, where the learner has to identify and check five from eight. No faults on any controls
