3 The Body Organ Systems • Integumentary System. • Components= skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands. The function of this system is that it covers and protects the body. 2. Skeletal System. • Components= bones, cartilage and ligaments. This system supports and protects the body; muscles attached to bones; provides calcium storage; site of blood cell formation. 3. Muscular System. • Components= skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle. This system moves parts of the skeleton, locomotion; pumps blood; aids movement of internal materials.
3 cont. 4. Nervous System • Components= nerves and sense of organs, brain and spinal cord. This system receives stimuli from external and internal environments, conducts impulses and integrates activities of other systems. 5. Endocrine System • Components= Pituitary gland, adrenal gland, thyroid gland, hypothalamus glad, pineal gland, kidney, pancreas, ovaries, testes, and other ductless glands. • This system regulates body chemistry and many body functions. 6. Circulatory System • Components= Heart, blood vessels, blood; lymph and lymph structures. This system transports materials from one part of the body to another, and defends body against disease.

Digestive System • Components= mouth, esophagus, intestines, liver, and pancreas. This system ingests and digests foods, and absorbs them into the blood. 9. Urinary System • Components= Kidney, bladder, and associated ducts This system excretes metabolic wastes, and removes substances present in excess from the blood.
3 cont. 10. Reproductive System • Components= Testes, ovaries, and associated structures. This system is the system of reproduction, which provides for continuation of the species. 11. Lymphatic System • Components= spleen, thymus, tonsils, and lymph nodes. This system defends against infection and disease.
