Energy

Energy. Energy is the ability to do work and to cause a change in matter. EX: A scientist would not consider a person sitting at a desk figuring out a math problem as using “ energy ” . However playing soccer is considered using “ energy ”. Energy cannot be created or destroyed!.

  1. Energy Energy is the ability to do work and to cause a change in matter. EX: A scientist would not consider a person sitting at a desk figuring out a math problem as using “energy”. However playing soccer is considered using “energy”.

  2. Energy cannot be created or destroyed!

  3. Potential EnergyKinetic Energy • The energy an object has because of its position is called Potential Energy. • The energy of motion is Kinetic energy. • (When something is moving = Kinetic Energy)

  4. How is kinetic energy different from potential energy?

  5. Energy Transfer Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one place or object to another.

  6. INFER • To infer is to make an assumption based on observations combined with prior knowledge and logical reasoning. • Ex. At 10:15 AM, the flashlight was shining brightly. At 3:30 PM , the flashlight gave off no light. I inferred that the batteries must have worn out no longer providing the energy needed for the light to shine.

  7. RADIANT ENERGYSOLAR ENERGY • Energy from the sun travels as radiation energy.

  8. Light Energy • Light - is radiation that we see.

  9. Example of Sun’s energy • Radio waves - (Static we hear on radios) • Xrays • Sun’s energy is stored in Fossil Fuels • Sun’s energy produces wind and the water cycle (weather)

  10. Although Solar Energy is free ---- Solar cells and collectors can be expensive.

  11. Heat Energy • Heat - is radiation that we feel. Heat energy is the total kinetic and potential energy of atoms in an object.

  12. Chemical Energy • Can be released by a chemical reaction such as burning. Ex: Gasoline in a car burns a fuel, usually gasoline. The energy stored in the fuel is chemical energy. When a chemical reaction such as burning occurs, the energy in the fuel is released. • When it is not being used, chemical energy is potential energy.(Fuel sitting in a non-moving car.) • A chemical reaction is needed to change chemical energy into kinetic energy. • Ex: Calcium Chloride released energy in the form of heat.

  13. Chemical Energy Chemical energy comes from foods we eat.
