  10. Fear Objectives • To understand some of the fears that society has of LGB&T people • To understand some of the fears that LGB&T people have of society, and how that may affect their lives

  11. What are Society’s fears? • Giving gay people rights will erode society • Threat to one’s view of the world • Inherited family values • Has been the victim of homophobic bullying • Fear that person might be LGB&T themselves ..a Safer Wales/Cymru Ddiogelach

  13. Coming Out Jo and Simon have been together for 18months. Simon is in your college. You do not know Jo’s gender. You will be asked a number of questions and you are not allowed to use ANY word that would refer to Jo’s gender Him, Her, She, Mr, Mrs etc Everyone has the right to feel safe Mae gan bawb yr hawl i deimlo’n ddiogel

What may be different for LGB&T people? • It may be hard to identify, and victims may not want to speak up for fear of “outing”. • It’s about someone else’s perception so victim may not be LGB&T, and may not want others to think they are.   20. Why get involved? • Regardless of your personal views no one “deserves” to be bullied. • LGB&T people have equal rights • Homophobic bullying is unacceptable in any context even if it’s against heterosexual people ..a Safer Wales/Cymru Ddiogelach

  23. Conclusion Language Consider what you are saying and the impact it may have on others. Don’t tolerate any abusive language Fear Be aware in your daily lives that not all people share the freedom some of us may have. People Respect peoples right to be individuals.
