Descriptive adjectives (forms and agreement) Adjectives: Words used to describe people, places and things; adjectives are used with the verb ser to point out characteristics. In this lesson, we explore the ways in which the forms of adjectives agree in gender/number with the nouns/pronouns they describe. Masculine nouns usually end in -o (in which we use el), whereas feminine nouns end in -a (in which we use la). This varies by noun, especially if the noun is an object.. For example… *Descriptive adjectives and adjectives of nationality generally follow the nouns they modify; adjectives of quantity are placed before the modified noun.
Possessive Adjectives Possessive adjectives: Words that express ownership; they are used to qualify people, places, or things. * Possessive adjectives are always placed before the nouns they modify; they do not agree in gender. For example… tu novio mis primos mis tias nuestro primo
Present tense of -er and -ir verbs * Two examples of irregular verbs are tener and venir; the endings are the same as those of regular verbs that end with -er and -ir; they are only different in yo forms. Tener turns into tengo, and venir turns into vengo. You will see this in the next slide!
A look at irregular verbs… *You use the verb ‘tener’ in numerous expressions… To express to be: tener + (noun) + (adjective) -Tienen hambre ustedes? (Are you guys hungry?) To express an obligation: tener que + (infinitive) -Tengo que estudiar biología. (I have to study biology.) To ask people if they feel like doing something: tener ganas de + (infinitive) -Tienes ganas de comer? (Do you feel like eating?)
