IP Telephony Cookbook Annex • IP Telephony Cookbook (http://www.terena.nl/library/IPTELEPHONYCOOKBOOK/) VoIP WS @ TNC2005 - POZNAN - JUNE 2005
IP Telephony Cookbook Annex • There is always space for improvement! • We identified three areas that are either partially or not covered • Practical H.323-SIP interworking • QoS • Security • VoIP Legal • Am I missing other topics? VoIP WS @ TNC2005 - POZNAN - JUNE 2005
IP Telephony Cookbook Annex • Practical H.323-SIP interworking • we described only theoretical how H.323-SIP should be done, now there are solutions out there (e.g. Asterisk) and we could describe it even if they are not really the final solution • the output of the Activity Area K on how to interconnect different deployments could be inserted in there • QoS • QoS was already asked when writing the IP Telephony Cookbook. We just did not have enough man power to deal with this topic. Anyway the topic can be of not a big interest because over-provisioning is still the easier solution here (I know AARNET is doing something different but I am not sure), even if I see some space for good recommendation in the wireless area for VoIP QoS (SWITCH has a lot of hot-spots in the Swiss Universities, it may become a trouble if people start using IP Telephony there) • Security • I think what is gaining major interest in the new deployments is VoIP Security, it is a broader term that include NAT, Firewalls (something is already written in Section 4.7) but should be approached in a more systematic way, and moreover is going to include other topics like: SPAM, Denial of Service Attacks and possible counter measures (I am working in this area in this period, a couple of workshop I attended, already given a couple of tutorial, organizations started looking at the topic, VoIPSA, CSIA) • VoIP Legal • VoIP legal could be of interest if considered not only for NREN but also for private research organizations, anyway legal constraints are starting to come out and are going to face with problems like voice and messages encryption at IP level (a good legal overview was presented by SWITCH in the SIPInfoday workshop in January) • What about "IP Telephony Cookbook: Advanced topics“? • Concerns • I am not sure if it is the right moment for it • wait before more stable solutions are present before starting writing? • is it worth starting now describing already what we have? • what about the man power for doing this?
