  2. WELCOME: Our Goals Thank you for volunteering your time. Our goal is to help you learn about the library system and how to shelve items using the Dewey Decimal System. We’ll review these shelving protocols: • Reading spine labels • Understanding branch label codes • Filing by author • Filing by Dewey Decimal Number

  3. WELCOME: An Overview Let’s started with a quick overview of the library system. There are five library branches: Lakes Region Library Central Ridge Library Coastal Region Library Floral City Public Library Homosassa Public Library

  4. The Dewey Decimal System The Dewey Decimal System divides knowledge into ten general groups for sorting subjects: Science General Works Philosophy Technology Religion Arts and Leisure SocialStudies Literature Language History and Geography

  5. You CAN judge a book by its cover! … or at least by its spine label. Spine labels are found on the spines of all cataloged items in the library, including books, audiobooks, and DVDs. Spine labels show you the item’s library branch code, the branch’s color code, and the item’s call number.

  6. STUDY: Spine Label Elements { The color label indicates this book belongs at Coastal Region Library (Crystal River). Branch color code Spine label The CR branch code means this book belongs at Coastal Region. Call number & branch code

  7. NOTE: Shelving Non Fiction Non fiction is easily distinguishable from fiction because non fiction contains numbers as well as letters in its call number. Dewey Decimal Number First three letters of author’s last name Branch code
