What is an Octopus? • eight-armed cephalopod (octopod) mollusk of the order Octopoda • members of the genus Octopus • a large group of widely distributed shallow-water cephalopods. • One of the most intelligent and behaviorally flexible of all invertebrates
Anatomy • The typical octopus has a saccular body: • the head is only slightly separated from the body • large, complex eyes • eight contractile arms • Each arm bears two rows of fleshy suckers that are capable of great holding power • joined at their bases by a web of tissue known as the skirt, at the centre of its body where the mouth is
Where do they live? Coral Reefs
How do they survive? • They have numerous strategies for defending themselves against predators: • expulsion of ink • ability to jet quickly through the water • to hide • camouflage and deimatic displays
Camouflage • An octopus's camouflage is aided by certain specialized skin cells • change the apparent color, opacity, and reflectivity of the epidermis • Called chromatophores • pigment-containing and light-reflecting organelles in cells • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoCzZHcwKxI
Thaumoctopus mimicus • Called the mimic octopus • “The greatest impersonator of the sea”
