ProFAA Update Airport Pavement Working Group Gordon Hayhoe, ANG-E262 Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center April 25, 2012
ProFAA Outline • New straightedge modes. • Band-pass filter change. • New zoom mode. • Translation to VB.NET 2010. • Pilot subjective ratings and ride quality index Skip Hudspeth, Cherokee CRC.
Straightedge Modes The length of all straightedges can be varied up to 1,500 ft (457 m) by the user The cutoff wavelengths of the band-pass filter can be changed to any values by the user
Physical Straightedge The straightedge sits on the two highest support points under the straightedge. Type 1 = maximum deviation is measured along the full length of the straightedge. This is the FAA standard. Type 2 = maximum deviation is measured between the supports. Usually smaller than for type 1.
Rolling Straightedge The ends of the straightedge are both at the same vertical elevation relative to the profile. The straightedge is translated to sit on the profile and the maximum deviation is measured along the full length of the straightedge The straightedge can cut the profile Computer simulation Maximum deviation is measured along the full length of the straightedge. Practical implementation
Two-Wheel Profilograph The ends of the straightedge are both at the same vertical elevation relative to the profile. The straightedge is translated to sit on the profile and the deviation is measured at the center of the straightedge The straightedge can cut the profile Computer simulation Deviation is measured at the center of the straightedge. Practical implementation
Translation to VB.NET 2010 – Windows Presentation Foundation • User interface about 80% complete. • Now transferring the calculation code from the VB 6.0 implementation.
Measure profile and import into ProFAA Compute vertical cockpit acceleration for a selected aircraft simulation in ProFAA Filter the cockpit acceleration signal in ProFAA and compute an objective roughness index from the filtered acceleration Compute a pilot ride quality rating from an established correlation between subjective pilot rating and objective roughness index Input the ride quality rating into a pavement management database Cockpit Ride Quality
