  2. Analyze the text • What is the subject? • What are the main ideas? • What is the genre? • What appeals are used? • How is the text organized? • What style does the author use?

  3. What do I need to know first? • SOAPS (Speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, subject) • Rhetorical Strategies (appeals) –ethos, pathos, logos (style)– diction, syntax, details, imagery, tone) • Why did the author choose these strategies?

  4. Introduction • 1st paragraph • Must have some essential information • Put SOAPS into your introduction • My example

  5. Example of introduction • Author, Kathryn Stockett, in her novel, The Help, describes life for the hired help of southern Mississippi during the 1960’s. Stockett’s purpose is to convey the life of these women and the struggles that they had to endure each day working for a middle to upper class family. She takes on a serious and affectionate tone in order to appeal to the emotions of the young adult and adult readers.

  6. Practice! • We are going to practice writing the first paragraphs of your essay. • Strong verbs-implies, flatters, narrates, dismisses, supports, defines, lists, warns, argues, questions, analyzes, vilifies, emphasizes, processes, ridicules

  7. Body of essay • Analysis part! Here you include a detailed explanation of the strategies the writer uses. • Work chronologically through the text. • Transition words: begins, opens, closes, contrasts, shifts to, juxtaposes, ends, moves to

  8. Every body paragraph must… • Identify the part of the text you are talking analyzing using transition words & strong verbs. • Identify the rhetorical strategies (specific text examples…hint…use your chart!!) • Explain how the rhetorical strategies are used to help the writer achieve their purpose & reach the intended audience

  9. Conclusion paragraph • This is probably the easiest part of the entire essay • Keep it brief. • Remind your reader of what you have said. 2-3 sentences will be plenty for this assignment.

  10. How should my paper look? • Introduction (3 sentences) • Body Paragraph 1 (Pick one appeal-ethical) • Body Paragraph 2 (Pick another appeal-logical) • Body Paragraph 3 (Rhetorical devices) • Conclusion paragraph (2-3 sentences) **Paper should be 2-3 pages typed** **Separate page for works cited information**
