Overview Definition and purpose of a digital portfolio? (DP) Guidelines and considerations Recommended equipment and software Design basics Challenges/disadvantages of electronic portfolios Type of materials/information to include Assessment Resources
Digital Portfolio • A purposeful collection of student work • Allows students to use multimedia to display achievements, experiences and abilities • Means for students to showcase creativity • An electronic archive that should begin early in the school year
Guidelines for Developing Portfolios • Provide written guidelines • Have students plan out portfolio first (create an outline or storyboard) • Collect materials, i.e. documents, photos, work samples, certificates, resume, etc. (should be ongoing) • Edit all materials well; use quality photographs (edit if possible) • Have students thank those that have assisted or had an impact on students
Guidelines for Developing Portfolios • Be realistic about design and expectations • Allow students to have input on contents • Clearly communicate implementation strategies and timelines • Guide students in being selective and limiting content • Allow for continuous improvement and growth • Make sure portfolio content meets the needs of those assessing the work
Required/Suggested Equipment/Materials • Digital camera, video camera • Computer w/ Internet access • Multimedia program, i.e. PowerPoint • Word processing software, i.e. MS Word • PDF conversion software • Scanner • Portable media
Before They Start USE PROPER FILE MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES • Create a Master Student Portfolio Folder • Create sub-folders for documents, multimedia (video, sound), graphics (photos) • Make sure to save all materials inside the correct sub-folders within master folder • Hyperlinks should be direct to sub-folder contents
Basic Design Principles • Do not type in all caps • Do not use all caps on script or decorative fonts • MY CLASSROOM PORTFOLIO • Create and stick to color scheme for slides • Use light text with dark backgrounds and dark text with light backgrounds • Light backgrounds are best as eye absorbs color • Make sure clip art and graphics represent slide content
Challenges Disadvantages • Electronic portfolios work best with students who have the technological capabilities to develop and maintain their own portfolios • Monitor to ensure students are not sharing personal information • Web information easily assessable to others • Ideas, documents, pictures, work samples, etc. may be taken and used without permission
Challenges • Can be very labor intensive • Require technology resources that may not be available • Teachers need to be technology literate to assist students • Students who are not creative may be intimidated by others • This is an eternal assignment
Monitor with Care! • Do not include personal contact information on information that will be posted publicly • Be selective with who they share information • Monitor pictures posted online • Have students get permission to include photos of others • Employers and colleges use Internet to screen • Teachers should obtain parental permission for student photos on websites or professional portfolios
Assessment • Create a rubric • Consider students’ individual creative talents and technical ability • Share grading rubric with students at beginning of project • Have students perform a self-assessment • Allow students to present completed portfolio
