Our second-grade curriculum includes language arts, math, science, social studies, and specials. We focus on guided reading, phonics, writing, EnVisions 2.0 math, and TCI science. Homework policy, home-school connection, and snack guidelines are also provided.

Language Arts Curriculum Guided Reading • Fountas & Pinnell Assessments to group & monitor progress • Small group instruction • Centers and WIN Time Shared Reading (Utilizing Journeys) • Whole class instruction • Think, Pair, Share • Teachers read aloud to model thinking skills and reading strategies • Individualized Daily Reading (IDR)
Language Arts Curriculum Phonics • Taught in a sequence • Students build sounds, blend to make words, and learn word and sentence structure. • Weekly spelling list Writers’ Workshop • Models of good writing • Classroom discussion of trade books and the writing process. • Daily writing opportunities • Students learn to write for different purposes. • Teacher and peerconferences • Journals • Journeys Curriculum
Math EnVisions 2.0 is the updated program to our EnVision Math program. Envisions 2.0 encourages differentiation, conceptual development of math concepts, and development of problem-solving skills. Envisions 2.0 is strongly computer based. • Manipulatives provide concrete examples to assist students in understanding lessons. Students learn various strategies for: • Addition & Subtraction • Single and double-digit numbers • Place Value • Number patterns to 1,000 • Counting money • Geometry • Measurement • Time • Graphs & Probability • Rocket Math • Xtramath.com
Science & Social Studies Science/Health • TCI: Bring Science Alive! We will exploring the different science practices. TCI allows students to incorporate technology with hands on experimentation. • Scholastic News/Science Spin Social Studies • Family Ties • Discovering Our Past • People, Places, Holidays • Maps for Today
Homework Policy 1st missed assignment • Student will come home with a “Missed Assignment” sheet that requires parent/ guardian signature • This sheet & the missed assignment must be returned the next school day. 2nd missed assignment • Same procedure as first missed assignment 3rd missed assignment *** Lunch Detention *Students are responsible for checking the Google site for homework assignments each night. *Teachers explain homework assignments and post on board.
Home-School Connection • Please check your child’s “Take Home” folder, homework, and backpack each night. • Please empty the contents of the folder each night and only send back homework and necessary papers. • Parents are teachers, too! Please check your child’s homework and correct any mistakes together. • Teachers will assume that homework has been reviewed by you and that mistakes have been fixed. • We will be checking that assignments are complete on a daily basis. • Be sure to check the 2nd Grade Google sitefor updates! *If your child struggled on his/her homework, please make a note of it so that we can review the material again at school. Snack • Send a snack to school for your child daily. • Due to allergies, please avoid peanuts and tree-nuts. • Include a napkin and utensils, please!
