  1. Sharecropping Sharecropping: Being a farmer on someone else’s land. The owner of the land sells you supplies and rents their land to you and you sell them your crop to pay them back.

  2. Since former slaves had no money or land most had to become sharecroppers. Because of Andrew Johnson, slaveowners/Confederate were allowed to keep their land. They rented their land and supplies to their former slaves. The former slaves were quickly indebt to their former masters and had no money and had to continue to work for them - - like they were slaves. Sharecropping was a way for southerners to keep the former slaves poor, so that they could not afford Poll Taxes and not vote, as well as keep their children from going to school. Sharecropping
