Text Messaging Constructive Destructive • Quick • Easy • Can be done quietly without much interruption • Immediate connection with friends and family • Cost of texting plans are decreasing and unlimited plans are available to save money • Texts can be misread. Sometimes the full intent of the message cannot be fully judged. • Texting while driving can be deadly • “Sexting” is dangerous • Some things that should be said in person are said through a text instead • Sore thumbs, neck, and head • New technology, can be costly • Autocorrect can cause confusion in communication • Technology bullying • Addictive and time consuming
Email Constructive Destructive • Gives you the ability to write out complete thoughts and reflect over what you are saying before sending the message. • Used a great deal in the professional world • Organize messages in folders where storage is nearly unlimited • Avoiding confrontation when in all reality two people need to talk face-to-face. • If a hurtful message is sent you can read and re-read it • Messages can be forwarded to unintended parties
Facebook Constructive Destructive • Keeping in touch with family members who might also have one of these sites. • Share pictures without having to develop pictures or upload large files to email • Find old friends that you have lost contact with • Accepting friends who might post negative things on your wall or page, and this reflecting poorly upon your character. • Accepting friend requests from strangers can be risky • Addictive and time consuming
Video Chatting Constructive Destructive • Keeping in touch with family members who may live far away. Being able to see them while talking to them. • Help friends with homework even when you are not together. • Stay connected with friends who graduate or move to another town • Chatting with people you don’t know. EX: sites like Chat Roulette • Inappropriate materials can be viewed live, such as violence, and sexual acts
Cell Phones Constructive Destructive • Cell phones can aid in case of an emergency. Family members could contact each other. • Stay in contact, regardless of your location • Contain access to: internet, games, texting, GPS and other applications. • Cell phone plans cost a lot of money. • Phone technology is always changing and the phones and accessories can be costly • Addiction to the phone • Distracts drivers and can be dangerous
