  3. Ways in which counselors assist students: • Help students stay on track for on-time graduation • Personal issues: friends, family, school, general • Crisis intervention and support, mediation • Academic support, advisement, and encouragement

  4. Our goal today: • Introduce you to Auburn Riverside High School • Give you an Auburn School District catalog (name) • Help you learn how to register for classes next year

  5. SCHEDULE • School starts at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m. • 6 classes per day – approx. 55 min. each • 5 minute passing time • 2 lunches determined by 4th period class • Lockers are available

  6. How does high school differ from middle school? • Non-attendance impacts grades significantly • Treated as a young adult responsible for actions and decisions • The teacher/student relationship is a partnership. Need to talk to • your teachers • Less drama and fewer rumors. Fighting and “drama” are • considered immature • TRANSITION: FREEDOM, OPPORTUNITY, SELF-RESPECT

Advice from Counselors: Take the most rigorous classes you can (family access) Maintain highest grades possible (transcript) Get involved Develop clear goals for your future Begin networking with your teachers, counselor, coaches, etc. Stay organized—use planners and calendars Learn to be resilient

  11. What can you do to prepare for high school NOW? Attend school every day (absences hugely affect grades) Practice taking notes in core classes—science, math, social studies Complete every assignment and turn in on due date Ask your teacher for help, increase your class participation Study over time for a test rather than cramming Improve your ability to memorize, summarize, and integrate knowledge

MINIMUM 4-YEAR STATE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Language Arts/English 4 years Mathematics 3 years (including Advanced Algebra/Trig or beyond) Senior math required(meaningful math or algebra-based science class) Social Studies 3 years Science—2 years of lab science (one year must be algebra-based--either chemistry or physics) World Language (same language) 2 years Fine, Visual, or Performing Arts 1 year

  18. COLLEGE BOUND ATHLETES - NCAA • Earn a GPA of at least 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale.) • This GPA is calculated for only the core academic courses which were successfully completed during grades 9-12. Only courses that have been approved by the Clearinghouse are accepted In addition, no special values are allowed for “+” or “-” grades. • Core Units Required for NCAA Certification • English Core 4 years • Math Core (Algebra & higher) 3 years • Science Core 2 years • Social Science Core 2 years • English, Math, or Science 1 year • Additional Core 4 years (English, Math, Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Philosophy, Non-doctrinal Religion) • TOTAL UNITS REQUIRED = 16

  19. Registration Sheet • Due to course availability students are not able to always get their first choice in courses. It is very important that students also select alternates. List alternatesin the boxes on the left of the selection sheet in rank order(1st, 2nd, 3rd…) CTE 135 Digitools

  20. Finally, make sure a parent and you have signed the form before it’s turned in

  21. Next Thursday, March 7, you will bring your completed registration sheet (your signature and your parent’s signature and teacher initials for honors classes).

  22. Things to think about… • World languages • Sports physicals – after June 1 • Letter sent in early August • RAVEN day—August 20 • First day of school • Forms are due to us next Thursday, March 7

  23. More things to think about… • Do we get lockers? • Are we going to be in class with seniors? • If I take Algebra 1/2 now is this a high school credit? • Who is my counselor? • When can I take a higher level PE like weight lifting?
