What is CyberSafety? • CyberSafety is a common term used to describe a set of practices, measures and/or actions to protect personal information and your computer from attacks. • CyberSafety is simply being safe online! You must know about… • CyberSafety Threats! • CyberSafety Tips! • CyberSafety Action Steps!

  3. CyberSafety Threats(to you) Cyberbullies Both children and adults use the Internet to harass or intimidate others. File-share Abuse Unauthorized sharing of music, video, and other files may be illegal, and download malicious software. Disturbing Content Look out for disturbing or inappropriate content. Online Predators These people use the Internet to trick you into meeting with them in person. Invasion of Privacy Beware of online forms; you may share information you don’t want strangers to have about you or your family. www.microsoft.com/protect

CyberSafety Threats(to your computer) Identity Theft A crime where con artists get your personal information and access your cash and/or credit Phishing Email sent by online criminals to trick you into going to fake Web sites and revealing personal information Hoaxes Email sent by online criminals to trick you into giving them money Spam Unwanted email, instant messages, and other online communication www.microsoft.com/protect

  5. CyberSafety Threats(to computer security) Viruses/Worms Software programs designed to invade your computer, and copy, damage, or delete your data. Trojans Viruses that pretend to be helpful programs while destroying your data, damaging your computer, and stealing your personal information.   6. CyberSafety Tips While CPSB has security in place, you need to be vigilant when receiving emails and going online just as you would with regular mail or door-to-door sales in real life. Consider the tips on the following slides.

  7. Be CyberSafe! • Use proper netiquette and be a good digital citizen. • Remember the AUP! Netiquette :)

  8. Never Give Out Personal Information Make sure to NEVER give out your name, email, home address, phone number, account numbers, Social Security number, CPSB Student ID, picture or any other personal information about you, your family, or your friends.

  9. Think B4 U Post Internet privacy is an illusion. Don’t post what you don’t want the entire world to see! Communicate respectfully online (chatrooms, blogs, networking sites, instant messaging (IM), etc.) Once it is online, it will always be there somewhere, even if you delete it.

  10. Think B4 U Click • Be cautious with email attachments and links. • Never open an email attachment from someone you don't know. For that matter, be very cautious when opening an email attachment from people you DO know, unless you know exactly what the attachment contains. www.microsoft.com/protect

  11. Be Careful of Downloads • Do not download and install software without permission. • Once permitted, only download from known or trusted websites. • Read privacy statements.

  12. Use the Red “X” to Close Pop-ups • Always use the red “X” in the corner of a pop-up screen. • Never click “yes,” “accept,” or even “cancel,” because it could be a trick that installs software on your computer. www.microsoft.com/protect

  13. Take Care When Shopping Online No online purchases without permission, even if it is free, and only buy from trusted online stores.

CyberSafety Action Steps • Be a good digital citizen by following the suggested CyberSafety tips. • Create smart passwords and NEVER share. • Always log out of CPSB computers. • Report inappropriate sites to teacher or other trusted adult. • Report to teacher or other trusted adult any harassment or intimidation online or in email; that is cyberbullying. • Follow the CPSB Acceptable Use Policy(AUP). • Be CyberSafe!
