  2. INTRODUCTION In this Power Point, you will learn about famous storms-- tornadoes, hail, rain, snow, and famous hurricanes such as Katrina, Gilbert, and Ivan.

  3. Famous Hurricanes On August 28th 2005 , Hurricane Katrina was in the Gulf Of Mexico, as a category 5 storm, with 175 mph winds. August 29th Katrina made landfall in southern Louisiana at a category 3 storm. Hurricane Gilbert was the 2nd worst hurricane in U.S history. Gilberts Death Toll was 318. Hurricane Gilbert made the lowest pressure ever recorded in the western hemisphere. Hurricane Ivan happened in September 2004 . It was the 9th named storm the 6th hurricane and the 4th MAJOR hurricane in 2004. It reached category 5 ,the highest possible category for hurricanes. It caused 13 billion dollars worth of damage to the U.S. One of the most destructive hurricanes was Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It started as a tropical wave off the west coast of Africa on August 14th.   4. Famous Tornadoes On April 11th, The Palm Sunday tornado killed 250 people and injured 1,500. It hit many states in the mid west. On March 18th 2009 , the tri-state tornado lasted more than 3 hours and hit Missouri southern Illinois, and south west Indiana. It killed 689 and injured 2,027! On May 11th 1953 , a tornado hit Waco, Texas at 4:00 pm. The path measured more thana third of a mile wide and more than 23 miles long!   5. Famous Blizzards The Great White Hurricane of 1888 hit from Chesapeake Bay to Maine more than 200 ships were grounded and more than 100 seamen died. Overall there were more than 400 deaths 50 inches of snowfall fell on Connecticut and Massachusetts. And 40 inches covered New York and New Jersey. In 1888 the School Children's Blizzard resulted in 235 deaths most of which were children walking home from school.   6. Famous Floods Nashville Flood- This storm and flooding took place in Nashville and middle Tennessee on May 1st and 2nd of 2010. More than 13 inches of rain doubled the previous record. Today you can see the rust lines on the houses’ roofs. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927- This flood started with heavy rain on the central basin of Mississippi . On April 15th 1927 15 inches of rain fell in 18 hours.
