3. Tuesday, August 23, 2011 • Objective: SWBAT analyze archetypes drawn from myth and tradition.

Writing – In Comp Book/Journal/Notebook for writing • Another definition for “myth” is a non-truth or a lie. • Think about a time you discovered something you were told to be untrue later (i.e. Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy or something else someone told you was true when it was not.) • How did you react when you found out the myth was not true and why do you think you reacted the way you did?

5. Archetypes - Notes • Most myths contain archetypes. • An archetype is an old imaginative pattern that has appeared in literature throughout the ages. • Coyote in the Nez Perce myth is an archetype of the trickster hero.

6. Archetypes - Notes • Archetypes can be • plots (the death of the hero, boy wins girl, the quest), • characters (the trickster, the savior, the rescued maiden) • images (a place where people never die, a golden cup, hoarded treasure).

7. Creation Myths • Read the question at the right of the story before reading. • Read. • Complete questions and the short writing piece at the end of the stories.
