Creating Text Boxes • Text boxes • Containers for text • Also referred to as text frames • Amount of text you can fit horizontally in depends on the size of the text box • Text automatically wraps to the next line once it hits the right side of the text box • Created with the Type tool • Drag the Type tool pointer on the page • Text automatically wraps as you type

Placing and Flowing Text • Place command • Used to place text from other files into a text box • Click the Type tool • Click inside the text box • Click File on the Application bar • Click Place • Text flows into the text box • Flowing text is also known as threading • When text fills a second text box a link is established between them

Formatting Text • Formatting text • Changing the way that text looks • You can change the typeface, font, size, color and style • Typeface: design created for a set of characters • Includes the alphabet, numbers, and symbols • Font: set of characters based on a typeface using a specific size and style
Formatting Text • Character or Control panel • Used to make changes to text • Select the text to format it • Double-click: selects a word • Triple-click a word: selects a line • Click text four times: selects a paragraph • Click text five times: selects all text in a text box

Formatting Paragraphs • Paragraphs: • Lines of text separated by the space created when you press [Enter] (Win) or [return] (Mac) • Formatted with the Paragraph panel • Leading: amount of space between the baselines of two lines of type • Alignment: the way a paragraph is horizontally spread out between the left and right sides of a text box • Hidden character: symbol that represents something else (e.g., a space)

Creating and ApplyingParagraph Styles • Paragraph styles: • Useful when you want to format several paragraphs in a document • Work by lumping paragraph formatting options into one named style • Enable you to control character formatting for paragraph text

Modifying a Paragraph Style • Paragraph Styles panel • Used to change paragraph styles • Paragraph Style Options dialog box • Contains formatting choices • Placeholder text • Made up of text that is divided into words of different lengths • Represents how real text will flow in your document

Creating and Applying Paragraph Styles • Character styles • Work very much like paragraph styles • Except they are created just for characters • Perfect for short pieces of text (e.g., headings, labels, or titles) • Character Styles panel • Used to set or modify an existing character style

Applying Bullets to Text • Bullets: • Small symbols that you can insert before the beginning of a paragraph • Used for lists of items • Can be numbers or symbols • Click Type on the Application bar, point to Bullets & Numbered Lists, then click Apply Bullets or Apply Numbers • You can also use the Bullets & Numbering dialog box

Finding and Changing Text • Find/Change dialog box • Used to find text quickly and change it • Type the text you want to find • Type the text you want to replace it with • Click Find • Click Change • Click Change All • Many options • Whole words • Case Sensitive • Special characters
