Review • How many moles are in 2.5 x 105 atoms of magnesium, Mg
Molar Mass • Molar mass is the weight in grams of one mole for any element or compound. • Hydrogen has the lowest possible molar mass of all elements because it has the smallest atomic mass. • Molar mass for elements is found by looking at the atomic mass on the Periodic Table. • The unit for molar mass is g/mol. • All elements have the same molar mass as the atomic mass EXCEPT the diatomic elements AND P4 and S8 (Does not apply in compounds)
Molar Mass • For compounds-find molar mass by adding the masses of the individual elements. Ex. Molar mass of NaCl 22.99 + 35.45= 58.44 g/mol
Molar Mass • What is the molar mass of CO? • What is the molar mass of KI?
Molar Mass • If the compound formula has subscripts, multiply the mass of the element X the subscript. • Ex. Molar Mass of FeCl2 Fe= 55.85 Cl=35.45 x 2 = 70.90 55.85 + 70.90 = 126.75 = 126.8 g/mol • Ex. Zn(NO3)2 Zn = 65.39 N = 14.01x2 = 28.02 O = 16.00x6 = 96.00 65.39 + 28.02 + 96.00 = 189.41 =189.4g/mol
Molar Mass • What is the molar mass of H2O? • What is the molar mass of CO2
Moles Problems Rules 1. ALWAYS put the GIVEN over 1 to start setting up your problem. 2. When using the unit MOLECULES OR ATOMS always put “6.02 x 1023” in front of it in a conversion factor. 3. When using the unit GRAMS always put the MOLAR MASS in front of it in a conversion factor. 4. When using the unit MOLES always put 1 in front of it in a conversion factor. 5. ALWAYS use the units given to you [i.e., don’t change from atoms to molecules and vice versa] ALWAYS LABEL THE UNITS IN THE ENTIRE PROBLEM!!!
Practice! • Calculate the number of moles in 8200 g of Iron.
