MetaLink Is Being Retired • Classic MetaLink Retires Friday, 11/6 • Being Replaced by My Oracle Support • Doc ID: 950042.1 FAQ • Doc ID: 841061.1 Latest details • How Many Still Use “MetaLink Classic”? • Hopefully more successful than Coca-Cola’s attempt at improvement…
MetaLink Is Being Retired… • BENEFITS • User Dashboard • System Health (via Configuration Manager) • Improved Service Request management (via Configuration Manager) • Community
MetaLink Is Being Retired… • DRAWBACKS • Tightly coupled with the Configuration Manager • UI is challenging and busy (sometimes distracting) and you can’t: • Always copy screen text to clipboard • Can’t resize some screen windows • Can’t Shift+Insert into search box • Has a learning curve, so don’t wait until last minute. • Note: OCM now embedded in RDA
Patch Set Update (PSU) • PSUs are proactive cumulative patches containing recommended bug fixes • PSUs contain the CPU patches as well as additional “controlled content” (i.e. no optimizer plan changes, no configuration changes) • Released on the same quarterly schedule as the Critical Patch Updates (CPU) • Rolling RAC installable • Regression tested
Patch Set Update (PSU)… • A PSU serves as a new baseline version for reporting issues to Oracle (e.g. Initial Release 10.2.0.4.1) • A PSU can be applied: • on the base release version • on any earlier PSU • on an any earlier CPU for the base release version • on the CPU released at the same time
PSU vs CPU • The PSU and CPU released each quarter contain the same security content. • The patches employ different patching mechanisms, so… • “…customers need to choose wisely which patch satisfies their needs better…”
PSU vs CPU… • Once a PSU has been installed, the recommended way to get future security content is to apply subsequent PSUs. • “…Reverting from PSU back to CPU, while possible, would require significant effort, and so is not advised...” • “Choose wisely grasshopper…”
Patch Set Update (PSU)… • For more information: • 854428.1 - Introduction to Patch Set Updates • 861152.1 - Does Initial PSU (10.2.0.4.1) Change The 10.2.0.4.0 Database Version to 10.2.0.4.1 ?
Critical Patch Updates • Speaking of CPUs… • CPU release dates are the Tuesday closest to the 15th of January, April, July, and October. However, the October 2009 release date has been moved - 3615609.993 • The next four CPU release dates: • October 20, 2009 • January 12, 2010 • April 13, 2010 • July 13, 2010
