7. What we have been doing: Establishing Toe By Toe in each YOI
Identifying and sharing best practice
Identifying ways of sharing information
Piloting and rolling out Mentor Training
Establishing good data collection methods
Piloting Evaluation methodology
Exploring options for continuation on release
Exploring ways to identify Learners and Mentors as soon as they enter the establishment.
8. What we have discovered: Cross-prison/holistic approach is the most successful.
Under 18s - LSA delivery not Mentors.
Raised awareness reduces stigma and increases uptake.
Regular meetings maintain momentum.
Toe By Toe delivery is extremely vulnerable to external forces.
Involvement in the Network reduces isolation for the Facilitator.
Facilitator needs approx. 3hrs a week for TxT.

15. Data At Brinsford, in January 2008: approx 6 Learners and 1 Mentor.
At the end of October 2009: 26 Learners and 10 Mentors.
In 2008 the Network had: 83 new Learners, 41 new Mentors.
In 2009 we have had - so far (up to end Oct): 112 new Learners, 49 new Mentors.
16. Evaluation Learners Feedback Starting Toe By Toe:
Finding out about Toe by Toe was easy for 95% of the respondents.
Information is provided predominately from Education departments (58%).
Most Learners (54%) heard about it within a month of arrival.
62% had started Toe by Toe within three months.
17. Reading and Communication Skills 93% of Learners agree or strongly agree that Toe by Toe is improving their reading skills.
97% can now read for themselves.
Communicating with others has improved for 60% of Learners.
95 % would recommend Toe by Toe to others.
18. Other Benefits: Self confidence has improved for 76% of Learners.
88% feel more positive about the future.
93% say they will go on to do more learning.
Support and Resources:
1:1 mentoring is seen as good or excellent by the majority of Learners as is the support from Education staff.
Support from prison staff is seen as less supportive.
