  1. What’s the Matter Interactive lecture introducing the concepts of atoms, elements, compounds, and mixtures

  2. You have one minute to list all the things you observe within the classroom. • You now have two minutes to list characteristics all of the items have in common. • Share your list with your lab partner and create a explanation of how all the items in this room are similar.

  3. “Anything that has mass and takes up space” • Do you agree or disagree with this description of how all the items in this room are related? Does this definition fit for everything in the room? What would you change about this statement?

  4. So, What’s the Matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space= MATTER Is there anything in this room that cannot be classified as matter? Why?

  5. What makes up matter? • With your lab partner, you have two minutes to explore and list your observations about the pieces found in the basket. • Share observations with the class

  6. Select one piece from the baggie and draw in the first block of the graphic organizer • Label the block “ATOM” • Write your observations about an atom in the block

  7. ATOM The smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same substance

  8. Select at least three more pieces of the same shape and glue them in the second block of the graphic organizer • Label the block “ELEMENT” • Write your observations of an element • How is an element different from an atom?

  9. ELEMENT Matter made up of only one type of atom

  10. Checkpoint • Write your answers to the following question on your whiteboard: • Anything that takes up space and has mass is? • What is matter called that is made up of only one kind of atom?

  11. Select two different shapes from the baggie and draw in the third block of the graphic organizer. Draw lines from one shape to another. • Label the block “COMPOUND” • Write your observations about a compound • How is a compound different from an element?

  12. COMPOUND Substance composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined to make a new substance Examples?

  13. Select at least three different shapes from the baggie and draw it in the fourth block of the graphic organizer. • Label the block “MIXTURE” • Write your observations about a mixture • How is a mixture different from an element & a compound?

  14. MIXTURE Combination of two or more substances that are NOT chemically combined and do not make a new substance Examples?

  15. Checkpoint • Write your answers to the following question on your whiteboard: • How would you classify salad, apple juice, and oil & vinegar? • NaCl is the chemical formula for table salt. How would you classify it? • Draw a picture of H2
