  1. “The Grand Design” A Course Case Study for the Sciences in the Rice MLS Program John W. Freeman Rice University

  2. Planning a successful science course Requires a hook Something in the Course to grab The student’s Interest.

  3. I try and use a human interest element • as the hook • Examples of some courses: • The Solar System and the Mind of Man • Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler • Newton, and Einstein • Science in the First Person • Donald Johanson, Charles Darwin, James Watson, • Carl and Jane Bock, Newton, Einstein, Galileo and • Copernicus • The Grand Design

  4. TheGrand Design is About the Universe and • Everything in it. • It is a book that asks: • When and how did the Universe begin? • Why are we here? • Why is there something rather than nothing? • Why are the laws of nature so finely tuned • As to allow for the existence of beings like • ourselves? • Did the Universe need a creator ??????

  5. To address these questions we take a layman’s tour of the basic concepts of the birth and evolution of the Universe, cosmology, quantum mechanics, relativity, string theory, extra-dimensions, M-Theory, the solar system and the evolution of life on Earth.

  6. Course Outline: • Begin with the birth of the Universe, the Big Bang and follow the • evolution of the Universe up to the present day, • => The increase in the rate of expansion of the Universe => Dark Energy • => A discussion of forces: Gravity, E & M, and nuclear forces • => to Quantum Mechanics as a probabilistic science as opposed • To Newtonian Mechanics as deterministic • Elementary particles: the standard model and String Theory • (=> The possibility of multiple universes) • Discuss the origin and evolution of the Earth and its atmosphere • And the origin of Life on Earth • Discuss Cosmic and Solar System “coincidences”: the fine-tuning of the • Laws of nature • Why do these “coincidences” exist? Anthropic Principle? • Did a Devine creator play a role? Hawking and Mlodinow say no! • What does the class say?

  7. What is the hook in this course? Why did students want to sign up for the course?

  8. A Student’s Comment on the Course………. “Probably no course that I will take in the future will more thoroughly fulfill my stated reason for applying for admission to the MLS program in the first place…

  9. You made our class so intriguing that my fascination again and again trumped my ignorance, and made my desire to know greater than the intimidation I felt because I knew so little (and in most cases, nothing) about a specific subject ………………...”

  10. Conclusion: Find a Hook and use it to reveal the Science The solar system, the Universe, the Earth, mechanics, quantum mechanics, QED, QCD Relativity, the nature of DNA, Lucy, evolution, natural Selection, anthropology String theory, archeology, M-theory, Evolutionary ecology, control groups, botany, zoology, molecular evolution, etc.
