  3. Pg. 1 Intro • When you are enjoying your wonderful chocolate bar, have you ever wondered who, what, when, where and why about chocolate? Well, in order to learn it in a fun way, read along! YUM!

  4. Pg. 2 History of Chocolate • Chocolate was first invented in Mesoamerica. Now, most chocolate is made in Africa. Aztecs and Mayans were the first people to use chocolate. They used it for religious events and celebrations. Throughout the 1800s-2000s many amazing people tried adding their own taste to chocolate such as Milton Hershey, he added milk to chocolate to make it tastier and cheaper! Chocolate was usually only available to wealthy people, it was specially made for them. Chocolate is still used today by almost everybody in the world. In 2000, Jack Torres famous chocolate sculptor started his own factory. He got so famous, he was nicknamed “Mr. Chocolate”. People will enjoy chocolates today and forever! MR. HERSHEY

Pg. 3 TIMELINE 1830, first hard chocolate was made 1936, chocolate was filled with nuts and fruits. 1895, Hershey sells his first chocolate bar 1755, chocolate came to the USA Chocolate beverages dated back to 1900 B.C. 1765, first chocolate factory was made in USA 1513, a slave was bought in exchange of 100 cocoa beans 1886, fudge was made in the USA 1926, Godiva competes with Hershey and Nestle 1971, Hershey’s Dark Chocolate comes out.

  6. Pg. 4 Why is chocolate important? • Chocolate is so important for many reasons. Chocolates are used for gifts, religious events, astronomy, and much more! • Chocolates are the best gifts for teachers, parents, siblings and friends. • Making Chocolate is a good business to own, some very lucky people are making a fortune of it. • It also energizes you, so when you exercise if you eat it before you start, you might of have some energy stored up.

  8. Pg. 6 Process of chocolate • People collect cocoa beans from cacao trees in Africa and South America, then they are sent to factories all around the world. First, cocoa beans are roasted and cracked for the nibs inside the bean. The cocoa nibs and mixed thoroughly with cocoa liquor. Then this mixture is melted, and is poured into a mold of any type. Lastly, the chocolate is refrigerated or frozen until hardened. Now it is ready to be eaten!

Pg. 7 Appearance • Common Flavors: Milk, Dark, Raspberry and Strawberry (etc.) Fruit Chocolate is made by crushing up the fruit and adding it to the cocoa bean in its process for chocolate. • Chocolate could be made into in melted chocolate, ice cream, kisses, cakes, cookies, bars, pieces, varieties of shapes, beverages and more.

  12. Pg. 9 Healthy Chocolate • The healthiest chocolate brand is Xocai. • Dark, unsweetened chocolate is the healthiest chocolate. It is the healthiest because it contains less sugar, less milk and it has antioxidants.

Pg. 10 Fun Facts • West Africa makes two-thirds of America’s chocolate. • More women eat chocolate than men. • A cocoa pod holds about 42 beans. • Astronauts use chocolate as a space diet. • In 2006, the largest chocolate bar weighed 5,000 pounds in Italy. This is where most of our chocolate is made.

Pg. 11 Chocolate Places to visit • Best places in the world for chocolate: • Hershey, Pennsylvania- Hershey Park made in 1970s, and the Factory made in the 1890s. • San Francisco, California- Ghirardelli Factory which was made in 1852. • New York City- many small chocolate shops that are delicious.

  15. Pg. 12 Conclusion • I am so sad to leave you here but, now you are an expert too on chocolate! People never really knew the history of chocolate. As you can see, chocolate is very interesting and also. . . VERY YUMMY!

Pg. 13 GLOSSARY • Beverages- any drinkable liquid, especially one other than water, as tea, coffee, beer, or milk: The price of the meal includes a beverage. • Burlap- a coarse fabric woven from jute, hemp, or the like • Fermented- Also called organized ferment. any of a group of living organisms, as yeasts, molds, and certain bacteria, that cause fermentation • Mesoamerica- Middle America • Pods- a dehiscent fruit or pericarp having several seeds.
