GIS Tutorial 1 Lecture 3 GIS outputs
Outline • Map audiences • Map layouts • Map scales • Multiple maps and output pages • Reports and graphs • Map animation • Exporting maps • Other map outputs GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Lecture 3 Map audiences GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map audiences Map use: Exploration Presentation Audience:Trained analyst General public Purpose:Visual thinking Communication Advantages:Graphical Believable Granularity:Fine Coarse Symbols:AbstractMimetic capital railroad GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Lecture 3 Map layouts GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map layout elements • Main map size and location • Map title and subtitle • what, where, and when • Legend • No need to label it Legend. Everyone will know what it is (this eliminates “chart junk”) • Data sources • Graphic scale GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Layout- Preview of Print to Paper or to an Image File Layout ViewIcon GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map layout elements • North arrow • Rectangular boundary (neatline) • Other elements • Inset maps • Data tables • Charts • Additional text • Photographs GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Layout example GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Layout example GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Fonts • Style • Simple and legible • Formal or informal • Number of fonts • Placement • Halos • Contrasts background GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Bad layout GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Good layout GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Lecture 3 Map scales GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map scales • Map scale ratios • Dimensionless • Used with any linear measurement unit, such as feet, meters, or miles • Example, 1:24,000 • Representative fraction • 1 inch on the map is 24,000 inches on the ground (or 2,000 feet) GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map scales • Graphic scale • Graphic representation of map scale • Places a line on the map with ground distances marked, such as 10 miles, 20 miles, etc. GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map scales • 1:5,000 is largescale 1:50,000,000 is smallscale GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Scale 1:100,000 Scale GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook

Scale 1:5,000 (large scale) GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Commonly used map scales http://id.water.usgs.gov/reference/map_scales.html GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map units • Feet or meters is • the map unit for • most local • government GIS applications GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Map units • Inch is the map unit • for most CAD • applications GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Lecture 3 Multiple maps and output pages GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Multiple maps • Separate data frames GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Multiple maps • Separate layouts • Same size • Same scale • Subtitles (optional) • From Layout View: • -After the first map is completed, • Select Insert> Data Frame • Select File> Add Data> select • desired data layer (The • select layer opens into the • new data frame) • Move the data frame to an • open space • Click and Drag the lower right • corner (grab handle) to resize • the data frame GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Data driven pages • Produces several maps from one layout • Customize, toolbars, Data Driven Pages GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Data-driven pages • Layout text—data driven GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Lecture 3 Reports and graphs GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Create a report • Select records for a report GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Create a report • Select View> reports> create report GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Report result GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Modify reports GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Add report to layout • To add report to layout: • -From layout view, click Insert> Object • In object dialog box, click the Create from File radio button, browse to report and double click • Click OK in the Insert Object window • The report is now on the layout, but needs to be resized and moved. GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Create a graph • View, graphs, create • Create graph: click Tools> • Graphs> Create • Use Create Graph Wizard • to create the desired graph. • Right click the graph> click Add to Layout, and close the graph window • Resize and position the graph window. GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Resultant graph • Graph can be inserted into a layout • Right click the graph> click Add to Layout, and close the graph window • Resize and position the graph window. GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
Create graph in Excel Copy and Paste object to layout Importing Charts -In Excel, click the boundary of graph to activate its frame -Right click the graph and click Copy -Close Excel -In ArcMap, Click View> Layout View -Click Edit> Paste - Relocate and resize the graph to fit the layout GIS TUTORIAL 1 - Basic Workbook
