About Ms. Whitney My background: Grew up in Manhattan, Kansas. Both Bachelor and Master’s degrees were earned at KSU. My experience Teaching for 20 years. Have also taught first grade, and seventh and eighth grade Science.
My Family Three sons • Ben – chef, lives in Portland Oregon • Andrew – artist, moving to Los Angeles • Jacob – Botanist/ Wildlife Biologist completing research in SE Missouri
Goals To meet the diverse needs of all students. To give students the academic and social skills needed to progress to sixth grade. To have a strong home/school connection which is beneficial to students.
Communication • Planners are filled out every day and are encouraged to be signed by a parent • Weekly reports are e-mailed on Friday’s or you can access them online. • Will e-mail progress reports weekly if parents request. E-mail me and I will put you on my Thursday night list. • Web backpack has class information.

Homework Shawnee Mission suggests that students in fifth grade should have approximately 50 minutes of homework every night. This includes 20 minutes of reading. Students practice skills learned at school. Homework is due the day after it is assigned, unless otherwise stated. We review homework in class. Parent assistance is encouraged.
Planner Time will be given for students to fill out their planner each day. Students are responsible for recording class work, homework, and project information. Parents are encouraged to sign each evening. Students need to share any other important information with parents. The planner information can be accessed on-line through web backpack.
Classroom Community Our classroom is a community that follows rules to help us get along with each other. We follow the Crestview R.O.A.R. Rules are consistent throughout the school. R.O.A.R tickets are given to those showing appropriate behaviors Oops tickets are given to those not students not following R.O.A.R.
Discipline Policy Students take responsibility for their own actions and follow the Crestview R.O.A.R. Positive reinforcement is stressed, R.O.A.R. tickets and Super Stars are awarded. There are daily, weekly, and quarterly drawings. Students fill out an Oops ticket, then during recess fill out an Oops Record and walk minutes of recess on the basketball court. Some offenses also cause student to go to a safe seat in the classroom. Other offenses sends the student to a Buddy room for less than one hour.
Conferences October 24: 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. October 25: 8:30 to 1:00 p.m. Please sign up tonight on the back table.
From Mrs. Kaldahl • Choir rehearsals for 5th and 6th graders will begin on the first week of September. • 5th grade choir will meet on Wednesday mornings and have a sign-up party on Wednesday, September 5 from 7:30-8:00 am. • 6th grade choir will meet on Thursday mornings and have a sign-up party on Thursday, September 6 from 7:30-8:00 am. • 5th and 6th graders will meet together 3 weeks prior to a concert. Watch the school calendar for exceptions.
