Order Of Operations

Order Of Operations. by Miss Pascale. The Order of Operations is the order in which you solve a problem. There are 3 rules that you have to follow. They are: Do all operations (+,-,x,/) in parenthesis first. Do all the x and / from left to right. Do all the + and – from left to right.

  1. Order Of Operations by Miss Pascale

  2. The Order of Operations is the order in which you solve a problem. • There are 3 rules that you have to follow. They are: • Do all operations (+,-,x,/) in parenthesis first. • Do all the x and / from left to right. • Do all the + and – from left to right.

  3. Here are some examples to help you learn! 4 + 5 x 6 = 34 How did you do?? 6 + 19 + 4 – 2 = 27 50 + 16 ~ 8 = 52

  4. There is an easy sentence we can say to ourselves to help us remember these steps and the order that they go in…. Do you know what it is???

  5. Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. P = parenthesis E = exponents M = Multiply D = Divide A= Add S = Subtract ( ) 2 8 5 X 5 45 ~ 5 16 + 9 24 - 6

  6. Let’s focus on P (parenthesis) Help me solve these problems below that have parenthesis in them! You are doing a wonderful job… let’s do some more! (17 + 3) ~ 10 = 2 5 x (15 – 10) = 25 (4 + 7) + (5 x 6) = 41

  7. Let’s focus on E (exponents) You will not see any problems that have exponents when you are dealing with order of operations, so lets just review what they are. That wasn’t too bad was it? Let’s move on! 5 2 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 32 3 5 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 = 5 8 2 + 5 32 + 125 =157 =

  8. Let’s focus on M (multiplication) Help me solve these problems that have both multiplication and division in them!! How did you do? Are you ready to move on? 7 x (3+4) = 49 (2 X 2) x 9 = 36 (8 + 2) x (24 – 14) = 100

  9. Now let’s focus on D (division) Help me solve these problems when I have parenthesis, multiplication and division involved! (Remember when there is both multiplication and division in the problem, you multiply first) You are all doing so well. Are there any questions so far? 12 ~ 4 x ( 3 x 3) = 3 4 ~ (2 x 10) = 5 4 3 ~ 4 (3) =

  10. Ok, Now let’s focus on A ( addition) Now these may get a little tricky, make sure we are doing the steps in the correct order! Those weren’t too bad were they? Ok, only one more step to go!! 6 x 7 + 5 = 47 50 + 16 ~ 8 = 52 (16 ~ 2) + (24 ~ 6) = 12

  11. Last one! Let’s focus on S (subtraction) Ok! Let’s try to answer these 3 problems that may have all of the operations in them. Remember the order that they have to go in! 7+(6 - 3) x 4 ~4 = 10 We have made it through all the steps! 8 – (3 x 2) + 15 ~ 3 = 9 8 + 3 ~ 3 – 2 = 7

  12. Now let’s test your knowledge of this objective with a game! • I will put you into 5 groups • One group at a time will answer a question • If the assigned group gets the question wrong, another group will get to try to answer itand steal their points. • If your group is not ALL seated and quiet then you loose your turn. If you shout out the answer before I ask for it, you loose 100 points. • Your team is responsible for keeping up with their points. • The team with the most points at the end will receive a homework pass! • Are you ready to play?

  13. Ok, get your team settled, we are about to start!

  14. THIS IS Operations in Order

  15. 4 x 8 + 4 x 3 =

  16. Step 1: 4 x 8 = 32 Step 2: 4 x 3 = 12 Step 3: 32 + 12 = 44

  17. In the problem below, which operation do you do first? 7+(6+3) x 4 ~ 4 • + • - • x • Divide

  18. A You add because (6+3) is in parenthesis

  19. In the problem below, which operation do you do last? 8-(3 x 2) +15 ~ 3 = • + • - • x • divide

  20. B Because subtraction is last in our order of operations (P E M D A S)

  21. 7(3+8) =

  22. 77 Step 1: (3+8) = 11 Step 2: 11 x 7 = 77

  23. 9(7 + 1 – 2) =

  24. 54 Step 1: (7 + 1 – 2) = 6 Step 2: 6 x 9 = 54

  25. What is the first step in solving 17 – 4 + 1 – 6 ? • – 4 + 1 • 4 + 1 • 1 – 6 • 17 - 4

  26. D Because you answer from left to right.

  27. Find the Solution: 14 x 2 + 6 ~ 2 =

  28. 20 Because: Step 1: 14 x 2 = 28 Step 2: 28 ~ 2 = 14 Step 3: 14 + 6 = 20

  29. What is the last step in solving 8 + 6 x 9 ? • 6 x 9 • 8 + 6 • 48 x 9 • 8 + 54

  30. D Because step 1: 6 x 9 = 54 step 2: 54 + 8 = 62

  31. 50 + 16 ~ 8 =

  32. 52 Because step 1: 16 ~ 8 = 2 step 2: 2 + 50 = 52

  33. 4 + 5 x 6 =

  34. 34 Because: Step 1: 6 x 5 = 30 Step 2: 30 + 4 = 34

  35. 9 ~ 3 + 4 x 7 – 10 ~ 5 =

  36. 29 Because: Step 1: 9 ~ 3 + 4 x 7 – 10 ~ 5 = 3 + 28 - 2 Step 2: 3 + 28 – 2 = 29

  37. Find the solution: (72 ~ 9) – (64 ~ 8) =

  38. 0 Because: Step 1: (72 ~ 9) = 8 Step 2: (64 ~ 8) = 8 Step 3: 8 – 8 = 0

  39. 3 + 6 – 2 + 14 – 3 + 2 =

  40. 20 Because you just do the operations across from left to right. 3+6 = 9 – 2 = 7 + 14 = 21 – 3 = 18 + 2 = 20

  41. (12 + 1 – 2) + (6 – 4 + 7 ) =

  42. 20 Step 1: (12 + 1 – 2 ) = 11 Step 2: (6 – 4 + 7 ) = 9 Step 3 : 11 + 9 = 20

  43. What is the first step in solving • 8 + 6 – (2 + 3) ~ 5 ? • - • ~ • + • x

  44. C Because we have to follow our order of operations and P (parenthesis) comes first. So you complete (2 + 3 ) first.

  45. 5 ~ 5 + 6 ~ 6 + 8 ~ 8 = • 3 • 111 • 0 • 1

  46. a. 3 Step 1: 5 ~ 5 + 6 ~ 6 + 8 ~ 8 1 + 1 + 1 Step 2: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

  47. Congratulations to the winning team!! Are there any questions before we end for today??
