Today’s Schedule (5 min) • Do Now • Complete Americorps Survey Now & Get out comp when you’re finished. • TLL Homeroom (9:35 – 10:05) only if you’re taking a Hopkins course • Not SpEd or Cert. only • Give Corps @ Lunch • Hodson Hall Restroom • Management Sessions will be offered two times except elementary: 10:10 am and 11:45 am • Split by grade level • Note firm start times & room numbers • Happy hour right after sessions at Mad River in Federal Hill!

  4. Outcomes (2 min) • Reinforce the mindset that Teacher Mindsets & Actions impact Student Outcomes • Think: TAL Impact Model! 2. Understand the importance of frequent reflection as a skill to Continually Increase Your Effectiveness 3. Practice using a framework for self-reflection & the creation of corresponding next steps

Silent Personal Reflection (5 mins) • Think about your Vision. • Using the reflection guide, consider the situation in your classroom at this moment in time. • Are you achieving what you want for students? • You will likely not be able to think about all areas at this point, so make good decisions about what is most important to you and to your students.

  6. Small Group Discussion (5 mins) • What felt good about reflecting in this way? • What was hard about this? • What is the importance of this type of reflection on an ongoing basis? • What is the potential impact on students? • What is the potential impact on your own satisfaction with your work? • How would this type of reflection look different now from 8 weeks from now?

Structures for Effective Reflection (10 min) • SWEEPS • Visually sweep around the classroom and reflect on what you see. • does the stuff I see make sense for students, goals, vision • do the procedures I see work well • where in the room do students usually have problems or misbehave • Student perception • put yourself in a students shoes and think about what they experience from they time they walk in your class until the time they leave your class • Rubric-based reflection • Reflect on your progress towards specific rubric goals. • Rubric goals could be self made, TAL, F8W, Vision, etc… • WHY? • Reflect on why you do each task during your day. • Does this make sense in light of your goals for students? • Do you spend most of your time on the most important things? • Others- 2nd years?

Planning for Reflection: Take Action (5 min) • Daily Reflection (quick changes) • When will you be amenable to productive reflection? • i.e. not unduly hard on yourself, not overwhelmed, not rushed • What can you do tomorrow to make positive change? • Weekly Reflection • How did I spend my time this week? • How was student mastery? • How was student behavior? • How did it feel to be a learner in my classroom? • Action Planning • Use a symbol • Put a reminder somewhere you will see it and not ignore it • Know yourself • How will you hold yourself accountable?

  10. Closing (3 min) • Action plan for reflection like you would any other priority, or it will not get done! • Continuous reflection & the selection of appropriate next steps is a skill that will be honed with practice. • If it doesn’t work, try something else! • Effective & continuous reflection will lead to improved student outcomes in your classroom, and you feeling successful at your job.
